Name: Arya
Age: 98
Race: Elf
Appearance: Arya is tall for a woman standing at 5'8". She is considered beautiful even amongst her own people with her long, raven black hair and slanted green eyes. Her build is toned and lithe like most of her people. Usually her hair is tied back with a leather strap; save for when she is in Ellesméra and it is left loose. She can be seen clad in plain black leather that is form fitting yet allows for the most movement in battle and every day life. At her side she wears a sword and on her back a bow and quiver of arrows. Again, there are differences in her attire when in Ellesméra. There she wears the Elves soft tunics and carries no weapons. Her skin is a tawny golden color and along with her emerald, catlike eyes she appears feline-like. On her right shoulder is the Yawë tattoo done in indigo colored ink.
Personality: Arya is first and foremost a very reserved, stoic individual. She hides her emotions and seems to have walls built up around herself to keep herself in and others out. When she does display any emotions they are usually strong ones that come out unbidden. She is very opinionated and outspoken; she tends to become impatient and irritated quite easily. She is known for being serious and businesslike, and quite to the point when speaking with others. Yet she reserves personal knowledge of herself and does not speak to others about her past or her feelings. She is a strong 'young' woman in all senses.
In some senses Arya is quite a feminist. She believes men and women to be equals and disdains the idea that humans might think her helpless merely because she is female. She also deigns to wear the same clothes as the males and does not understand why humans do not do likewise. Arya is quite solitary and aloof from both her own people and the Varden and humans. Perhaps it is because she was gone from her home for seventy years; perhaps it is due to the death of her companions at Durza's hand. In either case she is hardly known for being social. She even appears to be uncomfortable around other elves and keeps to herself most of the time. It is no secret to others that she seems happier amongst the elves, regardless of this.
Because of living amongst humans and dwarves so long, Arya is far more direct and practical when she speaks. She is also not bothered by using animal products such as leather as the elves are wont to be. She has proven to be strong an loyal time and time again to both her people and her cause. She endured torture and would have died just to deny Gallbatorix the information he sought to gain from her. She is just as loyal to the riders and her bravery knows no bounds.
Arya was highly trained in magic and swordplay for the first thirty years before she was considered worthy of guarding Saphira's egg. She is a blade master who is stronger and faster than any human, and can even overpower most elves. She can use very advanced magic, having been able to summon the essence of silver and hold the pieces of Isidar Mithrim above Eragon and hold her mind even when poisoned and tortured. She was also powerful enough to smash Isidar Mithrim, a sixty foot gem, using only her sword. As if this weren't noteworthy enough she is the fourth person to have ever defeated a shade, albeit with Eragon's aid. She also aided him, however, when he slew Durza.
History: Arya was born a year before the fall of the riders which makes her nearly one hundred years of age. She was banned from Izlandi's presence when she chose to dedicate herself to the greater good of her people and Alagaesia. This was symbolized by her accepting the Yawë tattoo. For seventy years she has been the ambassador of the Varden, fighting for their cause. She was also chosen as the courier for Saphira's egg. This she did for fifteen years along with Brom and Jeod, transporting the egg between Farthen Dûr and Ellesméra. They were hoping a new rider would be found but for fifteen years it was to no avail.
During one such transportation, Arya and her two companions, Glenwing and Fäolin, were ambushed by the shade Durza and a band of Urgals. Informed by the Varden's magicians, the Twins, about the egg the shade had been sent to capture Arya and steal the egg. They managed the former but before she was captured Arya attempted to teleport the egg to Brom in Carvahall. Instead it was sent to Eragon Bromsson.
The torture she endured at the hands of Durza was horrible indeed. Pushed to the point of insanity and death several times she still refused to give the shade or Gallbatorix any information. Each day she was given a deadly poison, Skilna Bragh. It was meant to suppress her magic and yet so that she did not succumb to death she was also given the antidote, Tunivor's Nectar. This torture continued for days on end. Arya began to hallucinate the memories from her past. She was treated unkindly by all save one soldier who she recalls having given her a white rose.
Gallbatorix planned to have Arya sent to Urû'baen so that he could personally interrogate her. However before this could happen she was rescued by Eragon after her spirit began seeking him out due to having been in contact with Saphira's egg all those years. Eragon and Murtagh rescued her and yet she was unconscious and had to be rushed to Farthen Dûr where the Varden were so she could be saved. The poison's antidote was the cure to her becoming conscious again. It was Arya who removed Saphira's armor when Eragon was facing Durza in the Dragonhold. Saphira shattered Isidar Mithrim, the dwarves most precious gem and treasure. It allowed Eragon to defeat Durza, however.
Arya accompanied Eragon to Ellesméra after the death of the Varden leader, Ajihad. There she reconciled with her mother and yet had to deal with Eragon's unwanted attentions. She distanced herself from him and after the Blood-Oath Celebration went to rejoin the Varden once more. She fought bravely at the Battle of the Burning Plains. She was informed along with Nasuada that Eragon's father was believed to be Morzan.
Arya continues to be friends with Eragon while retaining that distance between him. His affections for her are obvious and yet unwanted as she feels there is too great a number of years and obstacles between them. In truth she had developed feelings for Fäolin and has only feelings of friendship for Eragon. She has trouble making him see that they are not a compatible match even while trying to build upon their friendship and learning to open up to him more as a friend.
When Eragon learned of the other riders she was there fighting alongside the Varden in the battle that ensued after they went to retrieve the eggs. Now with the new riders the war wages on. Whose favor will it tilt in? Will they ever learn how to separate Gallbatorix from the Eldunarí? Only time will reveal the answers.
