Name: Saphira
***Brightscales, Bjartskular, Flametongue***
Age: 2
Race: Dragon
Appearance: Saphira has eyes the color of sapphires. They match her scales which are also sapphire. They are an intense blue which reflect and refract the light (hence the name 'Bjartskular/Brightscales given to her by the elves) and she is considered highly beautiful. Her talons and the spikes on her neck, back and tail are bone white. Her teeth are white and deadly sharp. The fang teeth are serrated and jut out of her upper mouth a little so that they are visible over her bottom half of her muzzle. Her head is roughly triangular and her cheeks have four spines. There are forehead spines between two slightly curving horns. All of these are bone white as are her talons and her spikes.
She is quite large and could be called the height of two and a half horses one atop the other at the shoulder. She is built to be highly aerodynamic and Oromis, Eragon and Saphira's elven master, said that he had never seen a dragon so skilled at flying and naturally suited to the sky. She is graceful, sleek and muscular with a long curving neck and long whippy tail.
Personality: Though Saphira is young she is undeniably wise despite. She is often found giving sound advice to Eragon and others; even going so far as to comfort them in times of distress. Saphira is a very proud being and never once bowed to anyone but Queen Islanzadi. She even went so far as to feel it was a slight on her pride to call Oromis and Glaedr 'Master'. She is very vain and thinks herself the most beautiful and majestic creature in all of Alagaesia--nay, the world.
Saphira will never hesitate to give others her opinion. Even if it is blunt and forthright she will speak out. Saphira enjoys fighting and once told Eragon it was good he did not since they balance each other out. In battle she is a demoness, ferocious and cunning--not a dragoness to be trifled with and not one to want as your enemy. She would do anything to keep Eragon alive--even if it meant turning herself over to Galbatorix and dooming Alagaesia to save him. She has a very powerful bond with her rider and at times they think as not two but one on the rare occasion. She does not like to be apart from Eragon but handles it much better than he does. Perhaps this is because she was alone in her egg for so long without him. Or perhaps it is because she is more independent than he.
She does not allow anyone to ride her save Eragon. The only exception would be if he were not there and she needed to go into battle. Then her choice of rider would be Arya, or barring that, Blödhgarm. She enjoys hunting and testing her prowess and seems to have no problems doing away with her prey or enemies. She is practical and logical, and while she feels what she does strongly in all matters save those regarding Eragon she does what needs to be done.
History: Saphira is the daughter of Iormûngr, a male who was bonded to a Dragonrider, and Vervada, a wild dragoness. Both of her parents were killed during the time of the rider's fall. Saphira's egg was sapphire blue with wispy white veins flowing through it. Harder than any stone or metal it was unbreakable. Her egg and two others (ruby red and emerald green) were stolen by Galbatorix who tried to get them to hatch without fail. Then Brom and Jeod discovered a secret entrance into Urû'baen and used the Varden's thief, Hefring, to steal the eggs. Unfortunately for an unknown reason he was only able to steal one: Saphira's. For fifteen years Saphira's egg was transported between the Varden and Kingdom of the Elves to see if it would hatch. Arya, daughter of Queen Islanzadi, was the courier. Her travel companions were killed when Galbatorix sent Durza the shade to recapture the egg and Arya.
Before it could be apprehended, Arya teleported Saphira's egg to the Spine in an effort to get it to Brom. Instead it was sent to Eragon, Brom's son. At the time Eragon didn't know what it was and when it hatched for him and placed the gedwëy ignasia upon his palm he became Saphira's rider. Their minds were linked and Saphira grew up in the Spine under his care. When the Ra'zac came to locate the egg they did not know it had already hatched. Saphira and Eragon fled along with Brom.
During the next months their bond grew as they accomplished many things together: rescuing Arya, defeating the Ra'zac and Lethrblaka, joining the Varden, fighting Urgals, Kulls and the Empire's army. They even defeated Durza the shade. They trained together with Oromis and Glaedr, and their bond grew more and more as time went by. Now they fight alongside the Varden against the Empire. Saphira was delighted to find there were more dragons. It meant she was no longer alone, and now she has a chance at finding a mate; though it is much too soon for that and she would prefer to wait until the war is over so that her young can be born, hatch and bond in a time of peace and prosperity.
