Been thinking about this a bit lately and I thought I'd post something to get other people's opinions on it.
Since we're using the canon world of someone else's making, with it's own laws and rules and everything else written and published and thus likely seen as set in stone, how far can we really go as far as plotting? How much direction can we personally take, and what can we really forge in this world? I know it's been said before that we're only 'using the world' but.. What does that mean?
If it's explained in a feasible way, do we really have free reign? Or how much of the books and their plots are we really confined to?
This is a major point of personal contention for me because I'm a plotter at heart, and like to throw chaos and odd twists into the mix as much as possible. I like to create monsters, and I like magic in all of its facets. It's why I role play fantasy at all.
I'm asking for limits, if any, in a nicely detailed way that kind've makes it easier for me to plot in a free form way or.. at least tells me that I can't. I have a thousand ideas on threads and what not, but I've been afraid to really post any out of fear of someone snipping at me that it conflicts with a plot device in the books. If I were to create a badass beastie unlike anything in Alagaesia to date, would that be frowned upon or welcomed? If I were to create a new aspect of deep lore for intrigue and mysticism, what would be the reaction?

I think, after many discussions in the cbox that I have been in or just read, that we are completely away from canon. Ang explained it as the site broke away from canon on an alternate timeline after Eldest. It seems this site it pretty fast and loose with that (not a bad thing) because Oromis is still alive in this timeline (or so I understand), and the whole cache of dragon eggs, and the sheer amount of shades would explain. We are also fairly open to the magic in how it works. Malandra's use of magic was completely unorthodox and weird for Alagaesia (sp?), but it was completely allowed here. Look at Castox (emmmmmaaaa!), who is modelled completely as a Wraith from SGA, but as it is explained in a way that makes it possible in the world, it got in.
So, what I mean through all that is that as long as the staff isnt against an idea for plotting or moral reasons that can be explained within the world relatively easily, either through canon or the insertion of characters that could concievably do things like that (EMMA), I think all is fair game. Or that is how I understand it.

That is a very good way of phrasing it Don, thanks.
Yes, as far as the site plot goes, we split from the timeline after Eldest, simply because this site's plot really comes from Lethrblaka, which started years before Brisingr. Now, certain things are there, like the fact that the Ra'zac are dead, Eragon got a new sword, things like that. Things that are extremely relevant to certain characters.
As for the site plot, that's a bit more mercurial to explain. See, I know that I'm the main issue with this. I know that I frown and browbeat you guys into going my way, and I like to keep things orderly, and as a result you don't bother to make anything creative. And yet, I love it when you guys are creative. It's an absolute joy when that happens, because the site is always, always better when you do. Like I said in the Main Plot discussion, if I'm borderline pulling my hair out, you're doing it right. Emma has much the right idea. She continuously makes up things that have me rubbing my forehead in frustration, and yet I love everything she does.
The only thing I ask is that it still remains, above all else, and Inheritance site. I don't want this to be a general fantasy site populated entirely by anime characters with whirling blade gauntlets and swords as big as themselves. I don't want there to be a new system of magic with every character. I don't want Goa'uld motherships landing in the Spine. I don't want the men of Numenor establishing Minas Anor on the edge of the Hadarac. I'm not at all against adapting small bits of favorite fandoms, (just look at Taraak and watch the Bourne Identity if you don't believe me) I merely ask that everything you create can be at least mostly passed off as something that came from this world that Paolini has created. So by all means, go ahead. Go create monsters, make plotlines, have an absolute ball while making me go crazy. I only ask that wherever you go, it's still at least mostly Inheritance.
Does that help explain anything at all?
EDIT: I am moving this to the Rules board and making it a temporary announcement. I think this is something very good to keep around permanently for new members to read. Thanks for asking, Form!
