In the days following the great battle at the Burning Plains, momentous events were stirring. The army of Galbatorix was in full retreat, and the Lady Nasuada began to rally the Varden’s strength to cut into the side of the Empire. Despite this, the hero of that great battle, Eragon Shadeslayer, was still ill at ease. While also troubled by the many revelations given to him by his newly named brother Murtagh, night after night his dreams were disturbed with images of fear, and the sense that someone was desperately trying to reach him… Finally with Saphira’s help, Eragon realized that he was being contacted by the mind of another dragon.
After finally communicating with this dragon who called himself Veroan,, Eragon learned that Veroan had fought in the battle with the Forsworn. Although his body was dead, his mind survived within the confines of his Eldunari, which a beleaguered Rider had buried at the edge of the Burning Plains to prevent him falling into the hands of Galbatorix. Veroan had waited for a hundred years before finally sensing the presence of two Riders, and after sensing the turmoil in the mind of Murtagh, knew that Eragon was the only one he could trust. That night, he revealed to Eragon a great secret, perhaps the key to defeating Galbatorix once and for all: The location to a secret cache of dragon eggs, hidden by some of the last surviving Riders before they were slaughtered by the Forsworn. Moving quickly at this news, Lady Nasuada dispatched a small force to this location at the edge of the Hadarac Desert, Eragon and Saphira staying behind to help recover Veroan’s eldunari. As it turned out, it was a poor choice.
At nearly that same time, king Galbatorix at last broke the will of one of the oldest eldunari in his possession, laying the memories of the dragon within it bare before his scrutiny. He too learned of the cache, and with Murtagh still journeying back from the Burning Plains, sent a detachment of his best troops. They arrived just as the Varden had recovered the eggs, and the battle that followed was furious. The Varden rangers managed to hold off the larger imperial force until reinforcements arrived to assist, but not before the Empire acquired several of the eggs and retreated back across the Ramr. What followed was the calm before the storm. Both sides faded back behind their borders to nurse their wounds and take advantage of their newly found prize, confining their military assets to small skirmishes and harassment.
That was a year ago.
Now the storm begins to gather again. Armies are marshalling, and new alliances being forged. New dragon riders have risen, and they begin to form their own legends. The Varden is nearly ready for its renewed march on the Empire, even as Galbatorix prepares to unleash his newest creation: Men Without Pain. All of Alagaesia holds its breath as the battle between good and evil begins anew.
Where will you choose to stand? Will you ally yourself with the Varden, to fight against tyranny and oppression? Or will you stand with the Galbatorix, and strive to crush the enemies of order and justice? Or will you fight for yourself, with no ideals beyond your own profit, accountable to no lord or king? Only you can decide. [/blockquote][/i]
