Name:Veles Vitras Locke
Age:27
Race:Human
Appearance:Veles is a tall man, with long dark hair, and the infamous poisonous emerald eyes of the House of Locke. Because of the nature of his powers, he can make himself look like anything, even invisible. He normally wears loose robes to hide his flute, and other tricks of his trade. The one thing that he can never change is his mark of the Shuman, it takes a different form on each Shuman, but his is a black snake that wraps almost all the way around his waist, but instead of meeting, the head travels to just below his navel. His eyes, his true eyes, are the most distinctive feature when he is not cloaked in a guise, after years of using his power his pupils have narrowed, like those of a snake’s.
Personality: Veles received his father’s drive, but instead of wanting power, he wishes knowledge. Veles is a curious man, often going far distances for a subject that interests him.
History: Veles Vitras Locke was born four years before Torn “Goodthief” Locke and his brother Romulus “The Human Shade” Locke. He was the son of Mercury Locke and his wife Hermoine, or so everyone thought. The only ones who knew were Mercury’s older brother, Grange Locke, and Hermoine. Grange had originally been the one arranged to marry her, but Grange offended his father, Nicodemus Locke, and instead, offered Mercury to be Hermoine’s suitor, and they were hastily wed. Nine months later Nicodemus was found dead in his bedchamber. The physicians deemed it a natural death because he was sixty-two. Grange was named head of the household in Nicodemus’ will, and no one opposed him, openly that is. Grange then tricked Hermoine to cheat on Mercury with him. Veles was born soon after.
Naturally Grange took an interest in the newly born Locke, tutoring him, and giving him gifts. Mercury thought nothing of it, being the more honest, and trusting of the brothers Locke. Young Veles was a quiet child, preferring to listen than talk; he often wandered the halls of Castle Locke, a few miles away from Uru’baen, listening to the secrets of the castle. Veles was curious, always wanting to know how this works, or why that happens, it was almost as if the only word he knew was “Why?”
The night Torn Goodthief and Romulus Locke were born was crucial to forming the man who would become Veles Vitras Locke. Veles watched from one of his favorite hiding places, one long forgotten by other residents of Castle Locke. Torn was born quickly, Grange quickly took him from the mid-wife, sizing up his new heir, when it was noticed that another babe was coming. It took hours before Romulus came, and somehow Sante, great-granddaughter of an elven noble and wife of Grange Locke was on the verge of death.
“We might still be able to save her, if we hurry to a healer, my lord.” The mid-wife said franticly. Grange looked at the withering form of his wife with cold eyes.
“No, she has wanted to escape me for some time, I believe this is her chance. She has given me an heir, I do not need her, or my bastard son Veles anymore.” Grange’s voice held many notes of contempt. Veles kept this information to himself, four years old and already almost as cunning as his father, his true father.
Veles was not surprised when Grange stopped visiting, stopped giving gifts. It didn’t even bother him. He grew wise beyond his years and spent many hours researching his family history, what he found would have shocked others, it interested him. Veles found that the first patriarch of the family was a Shuman, a master of the mind and of serpents. He studied the arts of Shumen, quickly learning what had taken even his ancestor, Nagendra many years to learn. By reading Nagendra’s personal writings he found the flute used by his fore-father. It was a beautiful thing; long, made of black ebony wood, and stylized white snakes designed on it. But it wasn’t just a flute, Shumen magic is different than most magic and does not use spirits or the ancient language. Shumen use magic through music, most commonly a flute, but if needed they can sing their magic. Shumen are born with their gift, one cannot become a Shumen. As with most gifts, their power grows for every generation missing the gift. As the first Shuman born in the House Locke in over three-hundred years, Veles found he was very powerful indeed. But he did not devote his whole time to his studies; he had grown very fond of Torn, his younger brother, and even kept an eye on Romulus. He taught Torn to be agile, silent, and to think on his feet, perhaps to take him as an apprentice one day, for he could sense the gift in Torn, weakly but there.
That changed when he was fifteen. Grange took him aside one day.
“Veles, how long has it been? I rarely see you.”
“You see me as often as you see your other sons.” Veles replied emotionlessly.
“You see much son, maybe more than safe. You could be dangerous to me one day. Especially since you’re a Shuman.”
“I’m not the only one who sees much am I, father?”
“Its not hard to notice, if you know what to look for. Your flute is a dead give away, the snakes that you surround yourself with. There is a reason Locke’s have not awakened their power in centuries. It would be best if you left here soon.” Granges eyes narrowed at Veles, who was almost as tall as he.
“Of course, I was planning to leave soon anyway, I have heard rumors of other Shumen elsewhere’s. But let me tell you a bit of wisdom I have gleaned from my studies. One day, you will regret things you have done, not because you own a conscious, but because one day, someone will come and exact their revenge.” Veles did not say those words in a threatening voice, but just as if he were passing along a dry piece of information that he had no interest in.
He left the next day, just disappearing, his belongings gone; it was almost as if he didn’t exist. He traveled for many years, once or twice coming across another Shuman, but rarely. He continues to travel, always looking for more knowledge, not just about Shumen, but in things that interest him. He only recently returned to Alagaesia, for the only reason he does anything, he was curious, specifically about the fate of his family, and the rumors about the return of the Riders.
Miscellaneous Information:Veles often attracts snakes to him, and has a few that travel with him always.
One is Ophius, who we would know as a male California King Snake, a large snake even by their standards. He also travels with a snake unknown to our world. It is a large venomous snake about the same size Ophius, named Sezuan. Sezuan is also a male, he has golden scales and has a crest on his head.
Shumen do not need their flutes for small things, like simple illusions, or hypnotism.
Shumen can speak to snakes.
Veles is well versed in hand to hand combat, in a style that is similar to a serpents strike, when fighting he will use these swift strikes to nerve points, normally incapacitating easily.

{I rather like him, one of my most detailed histories, and I put a nice chunk of info on Grange Locke in here, hope that wets your appetites.}
