Balder woke up as the suns rays hit his face through the window. Groaning he sat up and stretched. As he stood up he reached over and grabbed his sword belt. I knew it was a bad idea to try and out drink those guys last night he thought. Putting on his sword belt he walked through the door and down the stairs to the bar. After ordering a quick bite he grabbed his pack and set off towards the northern city gates. I hope that elf shows up he thought I need the money that he'll help me bring in. Looking again at the bounty sheet he sighed. He had known that this was beyond him so he had sought out help. The elf Ava had agreed to help, but he had no idea if she would show up or not. Sighing he walked over to the well and waited.

*Ava walked through the streets of Cithri on this beautiful morning, and enjoyed the new day smell. Even in the city, as crowded and loud and rancid as it was, she could enjoy the smell of a new day. Hell, anyone who was paying attention could, but Ava had found in her years of travel that humans were not that attentive to the smell of a new day, to the smell of darkness receeding into the light of the sun and the moisture slipping back to its place in the sky.
That aside, she was approaching the gate she had agreed to meet one Balder, a young human who wanted some training. She assumed in the art of tracking, but she wasn't sure. It could as easily be combat. Or he could just be bored and leading her on. Either serious way, it mattered not to her. She was a proficient tracker and skilled swordsman, although her true talent lay in the application of magic. However, she was being told to train this man, so she did.
As she walked into the city center near the northern gates, she drew a knife and started to idly spin it in her hands, careful to keep it from flying away from her. She looks at the well and sees the man Balder, and she smiles at him, the short elven woman walking towards him with seeming purpose. As she gets close to the man at the well, she smiles and speaks softly to him.*
Good morning, Balder. What bounty are we taking?
*She spins the knife once more, ending the arch and slipping it into the knife sheath she had on her leg in one movement, and tilts her head, looking at him happily as she awaits his answer.*

Balder returned the small elf woman's smile. Wow he thought, she is beautiful. He had know as much but he hadn't been completely sober on their last meeting. Gods I hate hang-overs he thought, realizing what was going through his head. Shaking his head to clear such thoughts he replied in his deep voice. "We are hunting a man named Keo Nagase. A magic user of some note among the Varden. That's not saying much though. Apparently he is trying some kind of dark magic. Now I've managed to track him to the Lake Tudosten area but, I lost him there. According to the mages I've spoken to he probably hasn't left the area. Something about the nature of his experiments. I have no clue what he is doing so I can't even begin to guess if they're right." As he spoke Balder began pacing back and forth, using hand gestures to emphasize his point. Stopping abruptly he motioned for Ava to follow. As they walked towards a small gate-house Balder began to speak again,"We have access to whatever supplies we need. Lady Nasuada is paying for it all." Grinning at the thought he continued, "Whatever you need, food, extra clothing, whatever just tell the guards before we leave. So are you ready?" He turned and faced her, trying to focus and not to let his still-groggy mind wander.

*Ava nods as he had explained the situation. She had heard mutterings of such a thing. It was gossip all over the Varden. Dark mage is caught and must run away. Ava mostly wondered where they had found the teachings. Dark magic was very rare. Elves and Galbatorix alike had sought to disrupt its use, although for very different reasons. And they had been wildly successful. The only place it could come from was a Shade at this point.
Now, that was a scary thought, and she dismissed it. Very unlikely.
She smiles again at the man who seemed a little... jerky and impatient at the moment, and took a smell. There was the light smell of a taproom, and she smirked on the inside, but said nothing. Everyone was allowed a little drinking now and then. She then spoke softly once more.*
I'm not very knowledgeable about that lake area, but dark magic has a very distinctive taint, if you know what to look for, so it should not be hard...
*He then motions for her to follow and takes off towards the gatehouse, and Ava just follows him as he asked. As they reach there, he speaks about the supplies, grinning about Nasuada paying for everything, and Ava smirks at that herself.*
Shes paying for me, too.
*She then nods at his last question, smiling normally now*
Yes sir, I am. I supply my own equipment usually, and this task isn't extremely hard. Thats always best for training. The real question is, are you?
*She winks at him, then thinks of something*
Do you have any magic protection?
--- Sorry this is so late, Balder ---

Yes sir he thought, slightly amused by the elf's comment. Normally when someone answered him it was boy or lad or kid. He smiled slightly at the thought. "I've never felt dark magic so I have no clue what it feels like, but I think I'm ready." At the elf's last question he shook his head. "Magic protection? Those are called wards, right? And no I never needed them before. I'm gonna need them aren't I?" As he asked he walked through the door to the gate house and entered a small room. Going to the table he grabbed a small leather pack and grabbed a small bottle labeled "Head-Ache. Grinning sheepishly he said "Sorry. I'm feeling a little out of sorts" He knew he was being kind of rude and hoped she would understand. Quite a few elves would have been slightly offended but Ava seemed more.... well, relaxed was the only word he could think of in his current state. . "How badly would I need wards? I honestly have never used them and don't know much about them. What good are they?" Turning to face her he looked closely, trying to force his thoughts into line.

*Ava smiles up at the man as he states that he has never felt it, and shrugs her shoulders. She wasn't surprised that he had never felt it. It was not a common thing. It was the sort of thing people did only if they were Shades or if they were drunk on power, and most power mongers wouldn't dare even going that far.
Still, she pats his upper arm and winks at him.*
No worries, you'll be fine. I'll help you pick it out so you can pick it out the next time.
*She listens to his answer to her question about wards, and thinks about that for a moment. She was mainly focusing on magic, and she was sure she could counter at least some of the dark magic, but for how long she could not say. Hopefully long enough.
With that thought, she looks up at Balder from her thoughts and she shakes her head to his question.*
You would if you were going alone, but I don't think they will be necessary this time. I would get your hands on at least one basic one fairly quickly though. Never know what your going to run in to.
*She follows him into the small room and looks around the room. Some of the gear was fairly shoddy, but the majority of it looked well made, if basic. She didn't notice anything that she missed, but she looked anything.
As she looks back to Balder and he explains the Head-Ache "Medicine", she laughs softly at his explanation, raising a hand and smiling.*
I understand. I've been there and done that. Several times.
*She looks once more around the room and then back to Balder.*
I'm ready when you are. Take your time, but when your done we may as well move on. Your gonna lead us there.

Balder nodded when Ava told explained about the wards. "I'll definitely look into getting some. From what little I've heard they seem useful."
After Ava's reply to his 'medicine" he laughed. It was hard to imagine a drunken elf, especially this one. "I didn't think elves tried human drinks. Anyway I'm ready so lets go." He began to walk towards the gate. As he walked he started to plan their route in his head. It should take us two days to get there, then a week ... no wait! Damn it! I forgot to ask. Stopping where he was he spun around to face the elf woman. He seemed slightly embarrassed. "Do you want to ride? I wasn't intending to but we can if you want." Pulling out a map he pointed out the area he intended to search. It covered most of the southern half of the lake shore. "It'll take a bit longer without horses, but most folks in that area are poor. Horses attract a lot of attention. We can take them but it's risky."
