Chapter One
The band
His smile made me sick. I looked at my parents all dressed up in; I <3 The End Of Forever, t-shirts and hats that said: My forever is The End Of Forever. It's not like my parents cared that I came up with the name The End of Forever, or that I started the band. No, it was just, oh Nick! Congratulations! You got a contract deal with a record company! It was my contract deal. I even signed it, but it didn't seem to matter because they just kicked me out of the band the moment they got somewhere.
I turned to walk out of the room to find my path blocked by my little sister Lily.
"Your mad because Nick got in and you didn't." said Lily looking at me carefully. Lily is like a mind reader, she can tell what anyone is thinking, even know she's only like seven years old. I usually wear sunglasses because when I don't anyone can and will know what I'm thinking just by looking at my eyes. I blame my mom, she's like some kind of witch or something and passed down a 'power' to every one of her offspring (7). I have two older sisters, Sarah and Maddy. Sarah's 'power' is-well beside being a total byotch - sensing stuff, no one can sneak up behind her, but she can sneak up one them. She knows whose watching and whose standing behind her. Besides that, Sarah is like really popular with the boys. Maddy's 'power' is direction. She knows like the exact coordinates of every where. She can tell you where the next bowling alley is, how many miles it is away, how many minutes it will take to drive and how many minutes it will take to walk, even though she has never been.
Apart from that I have three older brothers, Nick, Jake, and Chris. Nick is a charmer, he can get anyone to do what he wants, well anyone besides me. Jake and Maddy are twins and he is like the 'bad boy' of the school, and Maddy is the 'geek'. So pretty much, they're opposites. When I was ten, Jake taught me how to ride a motorcycle and drive and hot-wire a car, in his words "for emergencies" but I know it's just cause he forgot about my birthday. Jake is the talker, he is fluent in french, spanish, japanese, chinese, latin, german and italian. Rumor is that he needs to know these languages to sell drugs, but it's because he's grounded so often that he has nothing better to do than learn seven languages. Can you spell loser? And then there is Chris, the first child of this weird family. Chris is the jock, super strength and super smart. Not fair? Totally. Chris' 'power' is that he can tell if your lying, no matter how good an actor you are- believe me, I've tried. My power is more of a curse, If I show people my eyes then they know what I'm thinking and feeling, so if I looked at a guy I had a crush on, then he would deffinatley know, and he would know why.
"No I'm mad because Nick is a big fat jerk who cares for no one but his big dumba-"
"ALEXA LANE ANDREWS! LANGUAGE!" screamed my mom from the living room.
"WELL IT'S NOT LIKE SHE HASN'T HEARD THESE WORDS BEFORE, LIVING IN THIS HOUSE!!" I scream back.
"ALEXA I'M SICK OF YOUR ATTITUDE! OUT! Get OUT of my house right now!"
"I thought you'd never ask." I said slamming the door behind me.
I used to be in this band with my brother Nick and his friends. I was the singer along with Nick, we took turns and we were really close. I also play the guitar, but I have dyslexia so it's hard for me to understand the words when my brother and his friends wrote a song. I decided to tape one of our practices and then send it to a record company. Low and behold, we got a contract, and I got kicked out of the band. Currently Nick is touring Europe with the band and I am rotting at home. I hate him.
I found out I had dyslexia when I was nine. I remember my families gentle words.
Mom:" Sweetie, we have something to tell you, you know how you don't get the stuff at school, and can't really read?" I nod.
Jake and Chris break in; Jake" For goodness sakes mom, just spit it out!" Chris: "Listen up Alexa, you have dyslexia." I blink
Jake:"That's right, it's as Chris and I always suspected, your a freak." I look at him.
Chris:"Jake! she's nine years old! Can't you cushion the blow a little?"
Jake:"Right, sorry. That's right little sister. You're 'different'."
Dad:"Jake? Chris?"
Jake and Chris:"Yeah?"
Dad:"Shut the hell up."
Jake and Chris:"Yes sir."
me:"Wait what?"
Jake:"Well you see…"
Chris:"Jake, shut up."
Sarah:"I don't see what the big whoop is, just send her to Auntie Crystals house and we won't have to have this problem."
Maddy:"Did you just call Alexa a problem?"
Sarah:"Yes I believe I did."
Maddy:"Sarah! She's our little sister!"
Sarah:"Mommy and Daddy can make another one, your working on it right?"
Mom: Looks aghast.
Dad to mom:"I told you we should't have told everyone."
Sarah:"Well we were going to find to sooner or later. Wait Maddy, I just remembered that we do have another little sister, her name Lily."
Maddy exasperated:"You just remembered."
Sarah:"Yup, and?"
Nick:"Sarah, you know you could pay attention to the family for like two seconds. Do you even know how old Lily is any ways?"
Sarah:"I don't know, like one?"
Nick:"She's four Sarah, you idiot."
Mom:"THAT'S ENOUGH! ALL OF YOU GO TO YOUR ROOMS!"
me: blink, blink."I have what?"
"David! Are you Home?" I called up at the window.
"No!" David called back. David is my best friend. He's gay and has been since grade two.
I started climbing up the big oak tree beside his window. When I got to the top I took my credit card from my back pocket and slid it down the middle of his window. The lock opened with a satisfying click, and I kicked out the screen and opened the window. Landing on the floor I looked around at all do Davids stuff. As usual, it was all in order and the room was clean.
"You know you could always use the door, Alexa." David was sitting on his bed, watching my entrance.
"When pigs fly." I replied.
"Oh, Sarah fly's?" I ignored the last response, not because I like Sarah, but because I wasn't in the mood to talk about family. I think that I should mention how old everyone is. First is Chris, he's in his first year of University, so he's 19. Then is Sarah, grade 11, and Maddy and Jake are in grade 10. I am in grade 8 and Lily is in grade 2. Oh yeah, and the traitor is in grade 9.
"It sucks that summer is nearly over." I said as I lay down on the bed beside David.
"Well at least we'll be together at Mckinlly High."
"But that's just it!" I cried, " I won't be the first Andrews kid there! They'll be expecting like a jock, or a hottie, maybe a geek or a bad girl! I won't be what they expect, or I'll have to live up to my brothers and sisters!" Yes, I rant. But for good reason. That reason being: My family sucks.
"Well I have Mike's reputation as a ladies man. I know I can't live up to that because I'm gay. What if people beat me up?"
"I rather be beat up." I muttered
"Well that's because you can beat them back. I can't."
"Oh stop feeling sorry for yourself, David. You know perfectly well that I taught you how to fight." I snapped. He gave me a look, where he cocked his eyebrow up and looked up at me with his head tilted down. "Shut up."
"I didn't say anything." he replied, "I think your PMSing."
"No! I just want to bask in my depression!"
"Oh, you saw Nick on T.V. with the band again. I'll go get the ice cream." I had nearly forgotten that I wasn't wearing my glasses. I sully didn't around David, It was just easier to communicate with him this way.
I leaned my head down on the pillows, and stared up at the ceiling. Everything was changing, again. I was now going to be at the bottom, when I used to be at the top. Another year of sunglasses and excuses about wearing them in school.
"Here, your sunglasses." David had appeared at the doorway holding my ice cream container. "You forgot them yesterday. I can tell that your upset when your not wearing them. You know I don't like Sarah, but I was thinking. You should got for her look." he said jumping from topic to topic.
"What, skimpy and naked?" I grabbed the spoon from him and wrenched the top off.
"Your welcome." David said a tad bitterly.
"Bite me." I dug in, shoveling the ice cream into my mouth. " I think I'm going to cut my hair."
"What!?" David yelled, nearly causing me to drop my ice cream.
"Well, I want a change for high school. No more long hair and blunt bangs. You can even come with me."
"Great I'll get my stuff!" David snatched my ice cream from my hands and ran down the stairs.
"WAIT! I WASN'T DONe ye-ah, whatever."
Chapter Two
Winners and losers
"I love it!" I cried when I saw my hair. It was cut just under my chin. The bottom of my brown red black hair was straight and with my sunglasses, I looked so sophisticated. My hair is brown, with strands of red and gold, but it's dark, nearly black in the shade. It's gotten lighter though because of the sun. The bangs were the same normal blunt bangs, but with this hair cut it looked far from boring. A satisfied looking David stood next to the hairdresser smiling at me.
"You look beautiful Alexa."
"Are you saying that I wasn't beautiful before?" I joked.
"Well, duh! I mean you looked good, but you had that look since kindergarten!" Wonderful truthful David.
"Ouch, the truth hurts."
"Doesn't it always." replied David. I hoped off of the chair, throwing a quick thanks over my shoulder. My brother Chris' girlfriend is my hairdresser, so basically I don't have to pay. Family discount or something like that.
The sun outside was still bright in the sky.
"It's only three o'clock. Do you want to swimming?" asked David.
"Sure, why not. But you're going to have to get my bathing suit." I always had blow outs at home, so David and my family were used to him going into the house to get my stuff, when I didn't want to talk to them.
"Which one?" David wanted to know. I sighed,"David, I only have one bathing suit. Can't you remember that I wore it all last year?"
David wrinkled his nose in distaste, "Do you think that I could steal one of Sarah's old ones?"
"Most of them don't fit me Davie, but I guess if it's one piece it would be okay. Besides, Sarah just got some new ones yesterday." I had barley finished talking, when the door was already closing in my face. I sighed and blew my bangs out of my face. It was weird feeling the wind blowing on the back of my neck, even weirder feeling the eyes of the neighbourhood kids. I always wanted that perfect life. I wanted to be that girl. The girl in every school that grew up playing hide and seek with all the kids on her block during the summer. The girl who was best friends with the boy next door. And then in grade school, when she gets made fun of, the guy defends her and they become inseparable. In High school, they date different people, but just before the prom, he gets up the nerve to ask her out and bam! They are together, and end up going to collage together and then get married. Honestly I could have written some of the girls futures. Mary-Jane is one of them. She and Andrew, are like best buds since forever. My family never had anything to do with the people on our street, I mean we say hi to our neighbours, but only when we have to. Sad.
"You. Will. Love. The. Swimsuit. That. I. Chose." David smiled slyly.
"I already hate it."
"Good, if you look like you hate what your wearing, then it will just look even better."
"Did I ever tell you that I hate you?"
"Every day."
"Why. Why do I let you talk me into these stupid situations?" I asked David. The bathing suit was black, with the back cut off, and the front connected. In short, it may as well have been a bikini.
"Cause your stupid?" offered David.
"Well thanks for that happy thought, I'm pretty sure my self-esteem just shot through the roof."
"What roof? This is an outdoor swimming pool. I guess I'm right, you are stupid." I glared at Him. "Wow! Who is he?" Just like David. changes the subject so easily. "There wasn't anything else I could have said on that topic." said David reading my eyes. I quickly slipped my sunglasses back on.
"Where?" I asked.
"Over there, the one with the black swim trunks. Black hair, surrounded by squealing, pathetic looking girls." David said, pointing.
"Oh, the one surrounded by the squealing pathetic looking girls? Yeah I couldn't see him because of the squealing pathetic looking girls." I said, feeling bad because of insulting my own gender.
"Don't worry, it's just Karin's crowd and… Your sister Sarah and her friends, so you shouldn't feel that bad about insulting them. Oh, Sarah already got him to rub sunscreen on her back? She is good."
"Damn, he's hot. Why does Sarah always get the guys?" I moaned.
"Because you didn't look like you do now. I think you should go talk to him."
"BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" David looked insulted. I laughed for five minutes straight, and once I stopped crying from laughing so hard I wiped my eyes and sat down.
"Gosh, I think I just killed like 1000 calories." I told David.
'Well it's not like you didn't need to after eating all of that ice cream. If I had known that you would laugh that hard then I would have made you laugh longer, just in an attempt to help you lose those love holds."
"You know, you somehow seem to make every thing depressing." I told him, lying down on the beach chair.
"It's my job." Davie said, stretching out beside me, "Looks like the family reunion isn't over though." David nodded towards the door where Jake was standing, clearly arguing with Chris. Chris was working here while he was away from collage, and last week Jake was flirting with his girlfriend, so Chris go him banned from the pool. It's not as if Chris didn't have good reasons, besides the fact that Jake was flirting with his girlfriend, that could get him banned.
"I should go sort that out, shouldn't I." I asked.
"Yep."
"Your not going to save my spot if a cute guy comes along and wants to sit in it are you." I stated.
"Yep." I sighed and got up, walking towards the door. When I reached the door there was a line of people behind Jake waiting to get in.
"You guys can come in, don't let them keep you waiting. Just give me the money or swipe your card and head on in." I told the people. The filled past me, passing my two dollars, or leaning over me to swipe their cards.
"Hey! What did you do that for! I didn't get to see their faces, they might be banned!" Chris yelled at me.
"You take your job way to seriously." I dumped all the money in the register. Chris just shook his head and turned to start arguing with Jake again. "HOLD IT!" I yelled. They both looked at me. "Stop arguing and just let Jake go in."
"But he's banned." Chris pointed out.
Jake was about to break in but I beat hi to it saying,"Because you caught him flirting with your girlfriend. That's not a real reason to ban someone from the pool, your just abusing your privileges."
"You sound like mom." Jake put in. Oh gosh I did.
"Shut it you slimy womanizer, I'm trying to help you out. Would you ban me if you caught me flirting with your girl friend?" I asked him.
"Alexa, your a girl."
"Let's say I'm a boy. And so what if I'm a girl, I could be gay." I told Chris.
"Are you saying that you had a gender change?"
"Chris, it's an analogy. The point is, that if I was flirting with your girlfriend, would you ban me."
"Of course not." Chris sounded exasperated, even though I should have been the one.
"Then why ban Jake?"
"That's obvious. I have a chance, you haven't even had your first kiss." Jake informed me.
"Screw you, Jake. I couldn't care less if you got in or not." I snapped and turned and stalked away. I dropped into the chair beside David and sighed.
"Hey, hey, hey! That chair is occupied!" David joked.
"Shut up, I'm not in the mood."
"Touche. What happened."
"Jake made fun of the fact that I haven't had my first kiss yet."
"Then go get your first kiss Alexa. Prince charming is sitting right there. Within walking distance."
"Oh not this again. Look," I pulled my glasses down,"it's not that easy. I don't even know him."
"So get to know him. A little chatty chatty, whats up? Oh, nothing much. Well what are you doing tomorrow? I didn't have anything planned, why? Oh well, would you like to come to the movies with me tomorrow? Why yes, I certainly would. Why don't you give me your telephone number and then I will give you a call to discuss details. That would be great!"
"Who are you talking to?" I asked David.
"Oh be quiet, you know what I was doing. I was roleplaying."
"You said 'why' three times." I pointed out.
"I. Dare. You." David said slowly.
"Bahhahahahaha! I'll do it, but not because you, dared me to! Hahahaha!" I used to do anything on a dare… When I was 10. Now I do what I want, and I will only do what you want if;
A. You pay me. (And only if it's a high price, my lowest is like $1000)
B. I want to.
C. Your Logan Lerman.
Other than that, It's a no go.
I got up and started walking towards them. When I was About ten step away, the mystery boy looked up and winked at me flirtatiously. Immediately all the girls turned to see who he was looking at.
"Hey girls, what are we talking about?" I put on my best impression of them. I was greeted with a stony silence. "Hey Sarah! I loooove your necklace," I drawled dramatically, "where, oh where did you get it? Right! Now I remember, it's mine!" my sister looked uncomfortable.
"What are you doing here." it was a simple question, but Sarah made it sound like a threat. Then again, it probably was.
"Well I saw you wearing my necklace and I couldn't resist coming over here and having a good laugh. What do you think I'm doing here, this is a swimming pool isn't it? Or am I just really confused, because this is actually a bowling alley?" Sarah glared daggers at me. "You know Sarah, your brothers are over there fighting with each other." I nodded towards the door.
"Wait. I thought you and Sarah were like sisters or something." said Karin.
"No, I just follow Sarah around and pretend that I'm her sister so that my social standing will be higher. I'm not actually her sister, but shh, don't tell anyone or my life will be over."
"Did you know that sarcasm is the lowest form of humour?" asked Maya, one of my sisters friends.
"Did you know that?" I asked, "And besides, I'm perfectly fine with my low form of humour, I find it quite time consuming. All I want is my necklace back and I'll be on my way." I looked pointedly at Sarah. She watched me carefully as she untied her, sorry my, necklace. She lifted it up in front of me. "You mean this?" The innocence in Sarah's voice sounded totally genuine. I held my hand out to her. She smiled at me and threw my necklace back over her head, and into the water behind her. I dove, expecting her move. My foot caught on something and I hit the water, gliding in easily. I opened my eyes and looked around for my necklace. It was nowhere to be found. Bloop, bloop. Gasping for air I swam to the top of the water and looked out. Sarah and her friends were laughing their heads off. I looked around and saw that the mystery boy was holding my necklace with a smirk on his face.
"AHAHAHA! You guys are so funny!" I grinned. "You are such trickers!" in the pool I kicked off Sarah's bag, equipt with her clothes and makeup and money, that I had grabbed with my foot when I dove into the pool. She obviously didn't notice that it was missing. I was swift as I snatched my necklace out of mystery guys hands.
"Thank you and I'll take that. What's your name?" I asked.
"Cameron, Cameron Clarke." He gave me a charming smile, the type of smile that I'd seen Nick give girls so many times in my life.
"Well cameron, Cameron Clarke. Thank you for catching my necklace, before it fell into the water. It was a pleasure to meet you. I hope we will meet again." I curled my hand around my necklace protectively, as I climbed out of the pool. " Hey Sarah?" she looked at me, "I hope all your makeup is water proof, and that the chlorine won't ruin your clothes. I'm just glad that I'll be walking home dry." I flashed her an evil smile. Everyone crawled to the side of the pool and looked into it. Sarah's pink leather tote bag sat at the bottom of the pool. I heard gasps and cry from my sister.
"I win."

"Bahhahahahaha! I'll do it, but not because you, dared me to! Hahahaha!" I used to do anything on a dare… When I was 10. Now I do what I want, and I will only do what you want if;
"I win."
