Elaniver stared at the large doors that guarded the Varden’s hold of well-documented dragon eggs with the aid of an armed guard. He reflected at the sight, the doors had no real sense of grandeur. No finesse of royalty or wonder, they simply looked like normal doors. No different from other doors in the capital of Surda. No real indication of the marvel that they held what-so-ever despite the importance and beauty of what they held. Elaniver remembered being told tales of the dragon riders as a child, before the Empire had come. Before his family had been murdered. He folded his arms as he stared with a small sense of wonder in his expression. The doors seeming to beckon him slightly as he stared, the guards outside the doors didn’t beckon him however. They simply looked dead ahead, no emotion at all, no indication that they even noticed the large man staring at the doors which they guarded so dedicatedly.
Elaniver knew very little of dragon eggs themselves, his knowledge about the incredible things stretched about as far as knowing that they hatched into dragons which was fairly unimpressive as that sort of came with the title ‘dragon egg’. He didn’t know if there was some sort of rite that had to be performed so a dragon could hatch for its rider or whether the dragon simply waited until the one it chose cropped up. He thought that it was probably the latter and the hatching of a dragon egg would be an incredible event in itself. Not really necessary to add on things such as rites and incantations when you had such an event on hand.
He unfolded his arms and took a firm step forward, and another, and another. All of the steps firm and determined as he drew closer to the beckoning yet painfully normal doors to the egg chamber. As he drew closer the guards as one drew closer together and dropped their pikes so the point hovered millimetres away from Elaniver’s gut. He looked down at the tips of the pikes with some interest holding his hands out to the sides as a sign he meant no harm. This didn’t appear to be enough however for the guards as they kept their pikes firmly stable, not even quivering as the blades jutted out threateningly at Elaniver’s stomach. “Who are you and what is your purpose here?” One of them demanded rudely, glaring down the long shaft and raising his pike to point at Elaniver’s face. Elaniver briefly wondered if Autumn had gotten this kind of treatment when she had tried exactly the same thing he was trying right now. “Well why does anyone ever come here?” He asked bluntly as a glared back down the man’s pike into the rude guards face. “Just answer the question,” he replied forcefully.
Elaniver shook his head in a slightly amused way and said, “My name is Elaniver Addrodoc and my purpose may be to see if I am worthy of having a dragon hatch for me, so if you would do me the pleasure of letting me by.” He went to walk around the man but his companion stopped him this time, both of their pikes pressing slightly against Elaniver’s skin. Elaniver glared at the two men and said, “You don’t believe me?” He said colourlessly to the men who simply stared at him. “You can’t take your weapon in with you.” Said the one who had first questioned him. Elaniver glanced down at his war hammer and slowly removed it from his belt, the tip of the handle grazing against the floor slightly as he held it out to the man. The guard lowered his pike and his hand closed around the hammer tightly, he tugged at the weapon but Elaniver didn’t let go. The man looked up slowly at Elaniver who still had the blade of the other mans pike pressing against his stomach. “If you break it, lose it or steal it. Then I’ll break you.” He said simply before letting go of the war hammer and allowing the guard to lean it against the wall. The blade at his stomach lifted and he walked calmly past the two men, pushing the significantly harmless doors open and closing them behind him.
The first thing that crossed Elaniver’s mind when he entered the building was the question of what would happen if one of them chose him. When the dragon hatched what would the dragon do? As they all lay calmly, sitting there in rows. Each of them with a large amount of space, almost as though they might need room to move around a bit. Each of them with a certain captivation about their presence. As though they had turned their attention to the man who had just disturbed the quiet of their abode. Elaniver walked calmly down the hall, noticing that he was even watching his step. Trying to stay as quiet as possible as he felt the attentions of the eggs focus in on him. He looked from side to side at all of them, all of them different colours. He stopped in the centre of the building, feeling as though he was being examined and closed his eyes taking a deep breath as he wondered what he should do. Should he trawl through the eggs or would he know which one chose him if any of them had. He calmed himself. Opening his eyes as he finally breathed out again. The moment he opened his eyes, they fell upon one of the eggs. Its attention like those around it fully focused on Elaniver. He felt himself walking forwards, reaching the egg and crouching slightly so as to be eye level with the smooth green egg. He stared at it curiously before leaning in a little closer and letting his ear hover just above the smooth shell. Listening to it....
