((I'll just be controlling the dude temporarily for when he is needed))
Name: Galbatorix
Age: 130+
Race: Human/rider
Dragon:
Jarnunvösk Shruikan
Appearance: Little of what Galbatorix looks like is known beyond his inner circle. Only his riders and a chosen few ever see his face. Between domination of the Eldunarí and his personal search for the ‘name’ he has little time to present himself to his subjects. However, he has lately become more visible in the new onslaught on his Empire. Still, his original appearance is unknown, for like many of the elves he simply created an image of himself, formed with powerful magic. His magic is so great it would be within his power to create a new visage nearly every day. Needless to say he could know more about his Empire than many would think.
However, his preferred appearance is that of a tall regal man with an almost calming aura. His height is over six feet, but is not overwhelmingly tall. This way he appears strong, but is not overbearing to those he wishes to sway to his side. Even if one comes that is taller than him he somehow appears to be the larger force in the room. A master at smiling he can charm a raging dragon with his subtle facial ques. On his chin there is a small goatee that wraps around his mouth and ends in a point, it is perfectly shaped and its symmetry defies belief. Overall the tall king’s build exudes the strength of an experienced warrior. Muscled, yet not burly he carries himself with a grace that exemplifies a master of the sword and the pride of a king. He carries his dragon’s sword at all times and has not cared to change its color. For Shruikan is a black dragon, but the blade Galbatorix carries is a deep royal purple. In its hilt there is set a deep purple sapphire and the power that rolls from that single stone is extraordinary. The blade itself is a double-edged and built to be wielded by two hands though Galbatorix finds it is easy to use with a single hand. Simple yet elegant the blade is the only remaining link to his true dragon partner, Jarnunvösk.
Now his skin tone is somewhat pale, but this is to be expected from any wealthy noble. Pale is a sign of power and authority as someone would only become tan if they had to work outside doing hard labor or other menial work. There is not an ounce of fat on Galbatorix’s form and though he cloaks his strength with extravagant clothes it is easy to see that he could break a man’s neck with his bare hands. Yet his calming demeanor and powerful voice have a calming effect, while his features can appear somewhat paternal in nature. His hair is colored deep black and hangs just below his shoulder. Normally he has some of it drawn back in a tie, keeping the strands closest to his face clear of his site. At first glance his appearance his calming, a father and a kind king. When one looks deeper there is madness and cruelty, that charming smile is a façade flaunting power. Deep black eyes will search your soul and claim mastery over your very essence. The king can keep his subjects at ease, but when he turns to madness and cruelty he is truly terrifying to behold. Personality: Galbatorix is the most powerful being in all of Alagaesia, and he knows it. Before his subjects he can be the most convincing and kind king. His charisma knows no bounds and it is quite possible that he has laced his voice with the power of magic to keep people bent to his will. The king will first always try manipulation, get people to his side by being the nice guy that can offer them everything they’ve ever wanted and more. Promise of a united land and a strong new order of riders. It is easy for him to portray himself to his subjects as a caring and paternal master. Those that have seen him frustrated and angry know differently.
The king does not like to lose or fail. When something goes wrong it is not a good thing to be near him. He was arrogant and proud even as a young rider and these traits have not left him. After hearing of his dear Ra’zac’s demise he killed five of his subjects that were nearby. When unleashed his madness and rage are uncontrollable. He has ordered his riders to lay waste to small villages when things have not turned out in his favor. Galbatorix is incredibly cruel at these times. Perhaps it is the memory of pain from the loss of his dragon, but when he is angered the king will bring pain to his riders and generals. They fear the man even as they respect him. It is believed by many of his riders that Galbatorix is quite entirely insane from the loss of Jarnunvösk. His twisted morality validates all of his actions. A large part of him died with his dragon, and now he fills that void with anger and a need for power and control.
This makes his relationship with Shruikan incredibly strained. At one point in time he tried to get to know the dragon, have the creature fill the void left, but it was for naught. The black beast was not his Jarnunvösk and could never be like her. She had been perfect, strong, and proud. This Shruikan was a large beast, but so incredibly dull and stupid. Always bitter at him for the enslavement, not looking at the good that Galbatorix was accomplishing. So gradually the king gave up on trying to make Shruikan a replacement for Jarnunvösk. The black dragon simply became a tool, a crutch of sorts so that Galbatorix could still be seen as a true rider. In all truthfulness the kind doesn’t believe he needs the dragon, Shruikan is a symbol of his power, but he is not the source. After all, the king has the Eldunari under his control, what would one live dragon amount to against several hundred? So he ignores the creature, only rarely reaching out for some kind of connection.
He is entirely obsessed. When working alone, looking for the true name, it is best not to disturb him. He has worked towards this end for near forty years now. With hundreds of Eldunari to exert control over and paranoia constantly driving him to put up more barriers it is a surprise he hasn’t driven himself into the ground. He is determined to find the true name, and it numbs him to the problems within his own Empire. Galbatorix cares little for his people and cares more for increasing his own power and staying in control. In the end he believes he is doing what is right. He must be all powerful so that he can hold onto the reigns of his Empire. In some small twisted corner of his mind he doesn’t want anything to destroy his subjects; he believes his actions are for their betterment, they simply can’t see that by helping himself he is truly helping them. Galbatorix is determined to become king of a near utopian society. He will establish a new and grand order of riders, he will find the true name, thus holding Alagaesia under his total control, and he will unite all within the land under his one rule. Should any cross him he’ll simply have them put to the stake.
History: Galbatorix was born in the province of Inzelbeth at a time when the dragon riders were strong. At the time he had several siblings, but he was chosen to join the ranks of the riders and cared not for the family he quickly left behind. Those siblings have long since passed away, but the king remains. Having started his rise to power at the tender age of ten after the riders took him under their wing after seeing his great potential. The dragon Jarnunvösk hatched for the young Galbatorix and he quickly underwent years of training. He excelled in all areas, other apprentices simply fell behind as he pulled ahead in combat and spellcasting. The king’s arrogance and vanity only grew as he gained strength, many of the riders saw him as dangerous, his quick rise to power and his pride a sure threat, but it was ignored.
Once his training was finished Galbatorix decided to embark on a journey to the Spine along with two of his peers and their dragons. He was confident in his power and his arrogance led him deep into Urgal territory. They were reckless and were ambushed even as they made camp in the middle of the night. The young rider’s with Galbatorix and their dragons died quickly, too weak and inexperienced to fend off the onslaught. The king was able to survive, though grievously wounded, but as he escaped with his dear Jarnunvösk she was struck down by an arrow. It pierced her heart, and Galbatorix did not have the knowledge or power to save her, she passed away even as the young rider tried to escape with near mortal wounds. At this time it is said the king was driven mad from the loss of his dear friend. Young Galbatorix wandered aimlessly through the Spine, killing any and all urgals he came across in a near delirious state. The battles he chose were like asking for a death sentence, but none he faced were strong enough to defeat him, and so he lived on despite his suicidal tendencies. Eventually the urgals whispered of the ghost within their territory, a shell of a man so fearful to behold that they ran away at the sight of him. And Galbatorix starved, wandering lost and alone with Jarnunvösk. Until finally he emerged from the Spine and was saved by a farmer that quickly summoned the riders.
There the riders helped him recover and tended his wounds. It took a long time to finally heal up, but when he was finally conscious and healthy once more he immediately stood before the Elder Riders and demanded that they give him a new dragon. There was no plea or reasoning, he simply came and told them that he was to get a new dragon. Many considered it, seeing as he was strong and incredibly talented, but Oromis saw madness in Galbatorix and was able to persuade the rest of the Elders into denying the man’s request. Immediately Galbatorix became furious and bitter, he was further driven into his insanity and rage by the grief and hopelessness of living on alone. He started to blame the riders for the death of his Jarnunvösk and as that thought became reality in his mind, he began to plot his revenge.
Secretly he began learning the ways of dark magic under the teaching of a shade. The elves wouldn’t touch the things he was getting into, and it gave him power, an edge over the peaceful riders and the elves. Eventually with his new power he was able to use his charisma and get a rider to sympathize with him. This rider helped Galbatorix assassinate one of the elders. Then the king turned on his new ally and killed him and his dragon as well. Galbatorix took hold of the dragon’s Eldunari and fled before the riders could punish him for his heinous act. They pursued him as he fled into the wild, but they were unable to find him as he lived in agony within the wastelands. Like a thief Galbatorix remained aware of his pursures and outsmarted them, even as he bent the dragon’s Eldunari to his will. It took years to subdue the Eldunari, but eventually he succeeded, the riders having long given up their search. It was then that Galbatorix found another young rider. An incredibly strong man, but weak-willed and defenseless against his charisma and charm. The young man’s name was Morzan.
The young Morzan aided Galbatorix by leaving a gate into Illirea unlocked. This allowed Galbatorix to capture a black dragon hatchling. After murdering the young dragon’s rider Galbatorix used the black magic he had learned to force the young Shruikan into servitude. And so came into being a perversion of the sacred bond between dragon and rider. With Morzan at his side and a new young dragon Galbatorix used his dark arts to entice and sway twelve other corrupt riders. They joined him out of greed and a desire for vengeance and power. Galbatorix’s followers became the Forsworn and they soon collected Eldunari. With these Eldunari and the thirteen riders following him Galbatorix brought the fight to the riders. As they went along, massacring any rider they happened across they took the dragon’s heart of hearts, and so their power grew as the riders were weakened. Eventually Galbatorix was able to raid the place where the riders kept the whole collection of Eldunari. After this he soon came to battle Vrael, the strongest of the riders and their leader. Galbatorix was bested by the strength of the elf, but Vrael hesitated and stayed his hand instead of delivering the death blow. The king had no such hesitations and grievously wounded the rider. Vrael fled then, forced into retreat as he went to recover at the mountain fortress of Edoc’Sil. Galbatorix pursued him, eager to finish off the riders. Still the younger man could not defeat the elf, and he turned to trickery. The king kicked Vrael between the fork in his legs and then promptly decapitate the rider. And in one swift blow he took the head from the entire order of riders. With most of their numbers depleted and their leader dead it was a simple matter for the Forsworn to destroy the rest of the riders. Galbatorix had become the most powerful being in all of Alagaesia.
The King took over the Broddring kingdom, fought back the elves and dwarves and began to establish his reign as king over his empire. He renamed Ilirea as his own Uru’baen, and made it the capital. The Forsworn eventually killed themselves off and Morzan was struck down by Brom. Galbatorix tended not to care, he had killed those that were responsible for his dear dragon’s death, and he spent the next forty years mastering all of the collected Eldunari. His strength grew daily, even as Brom helped to create the Varden. There was a time of fury as Saphira’s egg was stolen and there was a time of great anger as he chased after the foolish Eragon. There was rejoicing when Murtagh was finally reclaimed and Thorn entered the game…and then came the hidden stash of eggs…bringing many riders to his forces and his dream for a new order of riders loyal to him became a reality. Now he focuses on finding the true name and keeping his power over the Eldunari, even as new riders join his ranks. This plague means nothing to Galbatorix, he is the most powerful being in Alagaesia, and no Varden or tree killing disease is going to change that.
