Name: Thamin
Race: Human
Age: 17
Appearance: 5'8", with dark brown hair that has a slight curl if he lets it grow more than a few inches. His eyes are blue, with a little bit of yellow around the pupils, his eyesight and hearing slightly keener than that of most other humans.
At first glance, Thamin looks like your average kid, but if you look closer, you'll notice that he jumps and prepares for action at any sudden or unexpected stimuli of sound, sight or touch. A result of the flaming ballista bolts and the attack on him and his uncle, but also from his training as a spy/assassin. You will also notice that he is always alert to his surroundings, looking around and listening to anything he can, for the same reasons.
Thamin usually wears a tan tunic and black leggings, and a black cloak with a hood if he goes anywhere he doesn't want to be seen or if he goes on a mission. He also wears a gold ring with a small emerald embedded in it, a ring that had been passed down from father to son when the son took control of their shop. Thamin's father hadn't given it to him yet, Thamin didn't run the shop, but he knew about it and took it as a reminder of his parents after they died. Shortly after his uncle revealed to Thamin that he used to be a member of the Black Hand, he gave him a ten inch long dagger that had served him well during his time as a Black Hand member. The dagger was very basic, with leather wrapped around the handle, and the guard was a half inch thick by two thirds of an inch wide iron bar, but it was extremely well made, especially the blade, which was six inches long. It had a simple, brown leather sheath made of hardened leather, with soft leather on the inside, so the dagger could slide in or out of the sheath without a sound. Thamin kept the dagger on the left side of his belt, a pouch that carried any miscellaneous items he may need or want on his right.
Personality: Thamin is very curious, always wanting to know the whats, wheres, whos, whens and whys, which has gotten him in trouble more than once. As was previously mentioned, Thamin is overly observant, due partly to his training, but mostly due to the ballista bolts and the attack on him and his uncle. Other than that, Thamin is usually a happy and fairly optimistic person, but is a little impatient, which has also gotten him in trouble a few times.
In all three of his lessons, spy/assassin, mind, and magic, Thamin tries his hardest, although his impatience level may increase some.
Magic is his hardest area of training, which he is getting increasingly frustrated with. He is doing best in his spy/assassin lessons, excelling rapidly, maybe getting frustrated here and there, but he may be a little too eager. In his mind lessons, where they are teaching him to defend, and attack with his mind, he is doing fairly well, but getting impatient with defending.
History: Thamin's parents owned a shop in Teirm. His uncle lived with them, his aunt had died a few years ago. Thamin and his uncle got along really well, always doing something together. His parents where doing some early business on the docks one morning, Thamin and his uncle went with them. When they were all inside a building, his parents arguing with a man who had somehow lost the shipment papers, flaming ballista bolts from an imperial ship ignited the whole structure. Thamin's parents died in the inferno, but he and his uncle where able to escape. Their business wasn't doing well in the first place, and really Thamin's parents owned and ran the shop, not all of them, with some help from Thamin and his uncle, but neither of them new how to run the entire shop. After a day and a half of grieving for Thamin's parents, they saw that they had no point staying in Teirm, and they were tired of the empire ruining their lives, so they decided to head to surda, and if things went really well, to find and join the Varden.
They left Teirm on horseback, and followed the Toark River toward Surda. On their trip, Thamin's uncle revealed to Thamin that he used to be a member of the Black Hand, and he began to teach Thamin what he knew, in case he should need it. Unfortunately, the empire was still keeping tabs on Thamin's uncle, and since he was heading to Surda, they attempted to kill them both. Thamin's uncle was shot with an arrow through the neck, and Thamin's arrow grazed his shoulder as he turned to see his uncle fall off his horse. His uncle's horse bolted, and Thamin urged his horse into a full gallop, narrowly avoiding arrows flying his way. Thamin continued on his journey, and through the gossip going around and many complications, he found the Varden several days after the battle of the Burning Plains.
He told the Varden his story, and he made it clear he wanted to join, and eventually they let him in, as long as he let them search his mind and swear oaths in the ancient language. He eventually told them that his uncle used to be a member of the Black Hand, and that he was teaching Thamin before he died, and that he wanted to be a spy and assassin for the Varden himself. When the officer he told heard him, he immediately had his mind searched again, and when they found no intention to betray the Varden in it, they reluctantly let him show them what he could do. Seeing his potential as an up-and-coming spy and assassin, they put him into training. Because of his new job, they recently started to teach him both to defend, and attack with, his mind. Even more recently, he discovered he could use magic, and was placed into apprenticeship under a member of Du Vrangr Gata. He is excelling in all areas of his training, and hopes to do even better for the good of the Varden.

Role Playing Example: Thamin bolted upright in bed to a loud thud. Realizing it was nothing he should worry about, he got out of bed and quickly dressed himself. He walked out of his bedroom to find his uncle pushing himself up off the floor, who had obviously tripped over the broken floorboard again. He smiled, helped his uncle off the floor, and the two of them entered the kitchen. His father and mother where already up, getting ready to go somewhere. His father handed each a piece of jerky, some bread and some cheese. "Are you two going to come with us to the docks?"
Thamin sat down at the table and bit off a piece of jerky. "Sure, I don't have anything better to do."
"I'm in too," his uncle said.
"Okay, eat quickly, we're leaving in ten minutes."
After shoveling down the rest of his food, Thamin helped his father hook up one of their horses to the cart. Once everyone was ready, they piled onto the cart and drove it down the street. After they showed the guard their papers and tied the horse to the hitching post, the four of them entered a building to pick up some shipments. Thamin's parents started listing off a few things that they had ordered to a bald, plump man with a tangled beard. The man walked over to a large stack of crates and brought a few select ones over to them.
"I believe these are yers," he said, going back to get one last crate.
Thamin started to wander around the small building, examining anything he thought interesting. He noticed that the building was old, the roof and some of the support beams very dry and falling apart in some places.
"What do you mean you can't find the papers?," said Thamin's father, raising his voice.
"I'm sorry mister, but I don't know where they went."
"Can you still please sell our order to us?"
"I'm sorry but I can't without the papers for..."
Thamin shut the argument out of his head and joined his uncle, who was looking out of one of the two windows. He was looking at ship with ballistae on it, something that Thamin had only seen once before. The ship was imperial, that was the only thing he could tell from the angle he was looking at it from. The ship also had a large amount of activity on it, and then he heard the sound of an alarm trumpet coming from the city wall. Nothing was really happening, so nobody payed heed to the alarm.
A few seconds later, two gigantic flaming ballista bolts plowed through the building, embedding themselves into the far wall. Because the structure was so old and dry, the ceiling and the support beams caught ablaze before anyone really knew what was happening.
Thamin and his uncle were the first to react. They both bolted toward the door, yelling the whole way. "Get out! Run!" The bald, plump man ran after them, Thamin's parents close behind.
Just as Thamin and his uncle made it out the door, and turned around just in time to see one of the support beams fall directly onto the man, crushing him. Thamin's parents stopped in their tracks, the path blocked.
"Go for the window! Climb out one of the windows!" shouted Thamin. Thamin saw his parents head for the window, but then the flames blocked his few.
The imperial ship launched another barrage of billista bolts, and Thamin finally realized that the bolts had come from it.
A loud crash came from the inside of the building. And they waited. As they waited, Thamin noticed that many of the other buildings where on fire too. And they waited.
Finally Thamin started to run toward the building in an attempt to help his parents, but his uncle held him back. Then the roof collapsed.
Thamin sank to his knees, shocked. Why hadn't his parents gotten out? Why was this ship shooting randomly at the docks? And finally, why was this whole thing happening?
A few arrows flew overhead toward the ship. Nothing. Another barrage of arrows flew overhead, this time Thamin heard screams shortly afterward, but everything was fuzzy to Thamin. He just stayed there, kneeling, tears streaming down his face.
Finally his uncle helped him up, and together they headed back to their house.
