Name: Rosali Ambrose Gender: Female Race: Human Age: 20 Loyalty: To her father's shipping company, which happens to work for the Empire. However, in her own personal thoughts, Rosali interprets herself as neutral, as she cannot help the Varden, but does not agree with the Empire. Profession: Heiress of a shipping company.
Appearance:
- Height: The woman is a normal height for a woman, standing around 5'4". And she always appears that way, neither appearing taller, nor shorter than her actual height. She has a small bone structure, which makes the petite woman seem even more fragile then she already appears. As a sheltered only daughter of a prominent shipping company, Rosali has been given everything she has ever wanted. However, she has also been subjected to the many requirements of an heiress, which requires girdles, certain foods, constant manner lessons, and the like. Her sheltered life has lead the woman to stay mostly indoors, with no exercise whatsoever. Many feasts used to be held by her father, but as his daughter, Rosali could not indulge herself, but could only eat daintily the amount that was fit for her position. Also due to this, the heiress is not allowed much time outside, and therefore retains a rather weak body, only fit for doing minor activities. Due to her lack of sight, her over-protective father has misjudged her blindness as a sort of illness, and does not allow the woman to go outside at all, and constantly protects his daughter.
- Complexion: Her lack of outside exposure and weak build is accompanied by an equally weak complexion. Her body is a rather abnormal pale shade of creme, that neither darkens nor lightens at any given time. However, Rosali has not been outside long enough her whole life to encounter the sunlight needed to tan her skin. When traveling from place to place, the heiress is usually daintily placed in a rich carriage, complete with dark curtains and a private set of archers, to accompany her.
- Face: All her features are sharp and slightly pinched, probably due to the stress (in Rosali's mind at least) over being an heiress to such a large shipping company. Also, her nutrition, which mostly consists of dainty "gourmet" foods that she can barely eat because of manners and the herbs that "doctors" feed her daily to "cure" her bindness. It is obvious that the men are more after her money than her well being, but Rosali ignores that fact and tries to carry on with a straight face. Her eyes are, as all blind people have, a transparent blue, almost grey. In an effort to hide them, and to prevent pity from the people she talks to, the heiress has long bangs that go past her eyes. Her features may be considered above average, even pretty, save for her unhealthy glow and extremely thin build. Remarkably, however, the woman does not look at all like her parents, but retains features from both sides that seem to have skipped a generation or two. Many say that Rosali appears to be the splitting image of her grandmother, though the heiress herself cannot and will not be able to tell, or ever know for herself.
- Hair: No matter how unhealthy Rosali appears, her hair will always shine as a slightly orange tinted auburn. Her wavy hair is rich and thick, the pride and joy of the heiress herself, and a prime trait she supposed passed down from her grandmother. It was grown out to her waist, which is not very long for her short build. For company parties and such, she frequently finds herself with the mound of hair atop her head, arranged in various intricate patterns that Rosali always asks the maids to describe to her. They shower her with warm and sugary praise, only to change person in the shadowy hallways of her estate, calling the heiress a "spoiled useless woman who can't even see her own two feet". However, her personal nurses are the most genuine people the heiress has ever known, and they appear to be true to their word when they speak to her. She believes them wholeheartedly.
- Clothing: Always, Rosali is adorned by wealthy, affluent garments that seem to cling to the woman's frail body. It is a fact that the heiress herself cannot erase, that she is an heiress, and she must act like one. Every piece of clothing she wears is intricately hand-woven, usually imported from various working cities around the country. However, she has recently begun to own more laced attire, as there has been a sudden influx of well made, but cheap lace. The white material suits the woman perfectly, and seems to almost compliment her pale skin. Whenever the woman finds her way out of her father's clutches, the nurses usually help her by lending their "street clothes," which are very inconspicuous. The brash and high attitude of Rosali, however likable, always finds a way to give her away while in "disguise" or a "temporary escapee".
Weapons and Belongings:
- Cane: A gift from a rather generous merchant traveling through Teirm, Rosali received it from the man in exchange for a meeting with her father. They had met by coincidence, on one of the few days that the woman managed to escape from her father's overprotective clutches. That same man is actually now a prime assistant to her father, and still especially kind to the blind Rosali. The cane is made out a single branch of firm and hard oak. Many intricate designs are carved at its head, telling of olden stories in the city itself. However, Rosali just appreciates the fact that it exists, as many a road or object have been made known to the woman when she walks.
- Ranuul the Cat: At a young age, Rosali had been confined to her room in her father's estate in Teirm. She had spent her days there in lonely confidence, her only company the nurses that came in to serve food, and the many doctors who attempted to "cure" her blindness. One doctor, Karr, however, knew that the fact was not possible with one glance and the young Rosali, and openly admitted it to her father. He was furious, saying that "My daughter, an Ambrose, cannot be an un-curable! It's impossible! She cannot be useless!" The doctor was almost run out of the house, but given one "last chance" at forgiveness to her father. Instead, the man brought her Ranuul, moved by pity at her loneliness, and left the house without a word. The name is now refused to be spoken in her father's presence, and not another word of that sense has been spoken to him from any other doctor since. Rosali first raised the cat in secret, keeping her small joy confined to only her nurse and self. However, when her father got word of it, he almost decided to abandon the animal. He eventually gave in to the young girl & her nurses' pleas, and let her keep the cat. If its origin ever was exposed, it would immediately be disposed of. The love and joy she poured into the cat gave good results, as it loves his owner to the death, and accompanies her everywhere, even on her "escapee nights".
- The "Ambrose" Family Crest Ring: A requirement of all family members, the ring is to be worn on the "pointer finger" of the right hand. The ring is quite bigger than normal, an intricately woven series of brass strips formed together in a perfect fit to Rosali's finger. At the age of 16, all descendants receive it, as the heiress did at that age, and must always wear the item from identification of their status, and in less polite terms, to show off. Hers particularly has a small diamond set in the brass, signifying her "heiress" status. It's a surprise that the ring hasn't been stolen yet, as it's worth a hefty sum of money. However, it has been described to Rosali enough times that she has enough common sense to remove it from her finger before her nightly "outings".
Personality:
- Spoiled: Although the heiress has a kind heart, she has been spoiled her whole life, starting from when she was a child. Sometimes, she expects everyone around her to cater to her needs, though she doesn't intend to come across as such. It's just how she was raised, and is used to. Being raised in a prominent shipping company family, and atop of that, being blind gave many people reasons to shower her with gifts out of pity, or for bribing purposes. However, as she grows up, Rosail is attempting to change her this aspect of herself, though the trait often appears at her most stressed, or in deep aggravation ---- as she sees that people out of her family or maids do not tolerate the trait nearly as much.
- Ignorant: Because of her raising (stated above), Rosali is ignorant of many "customs" of the "commoners", and many activities/items/etc. that are nothing new to the people themselves, but are completely unknown to the woman. This is the reason for most of her night trips, to learn more about the people for when she takes over the company, and also to create a different attitude towards others. However, it's usually just to get out of the sights of her overprotective father.
- Persuasive: A fluent gift Rosali has acquired over time out of pure necessity to make up for her lack of sight, she uses her skill to get herself out of trouble with her father, or to weave her way out of bad situations during her trips. It's become rather useful as she's gotten older, and the woman uses it a lot to her advantage, but not to manipulate people.
- Sensitive: Through her lack of sight, Rosali has learned to be extremely sensitive to others. The actions, words, and the tone of other voice are processed intricately in her mind, and the heiress has become an almost faultless identifier of lies, however well disguised.
- Brash: Rosali is currently rebelling against her heritage, as she is sick of being bottled up her whole life, labeled as a sick and useless heiress to a falling shipping business. However, though it's obvious that the woman has kind intentions, she tends to act on her impulses and wants of that particular moment. When not required to use the manners and actions required of her position, she uses a rather confidant swagger that completely contradicts her week appearance. The maids that allow the woman to escape at night have become her closet friends, as they soon realized after beginning to serve Rosali that she had no want for them to do so.
- Rebellious: For the reasons stated above, as Rosali wants to break away from her life as an heiress, even though she does not realize its many consequences on her lifestyle. However, the woman is still seems to be willing to risk that in order to release herself from the company, and its many ropes that bind her.
- Authoritative: Due to her raising as an heiress who must boss many people around, Rosali has a tendency to act rather superior to others with considerably lower social status. However, the way that does so does not create any harsh feelings, and her "superior gestures" are usually very subtle. However, when the time comes to make a necessary order, Rosali will come through, with a voice that commands respect. Few have disobeyed her when it went to that extent.
Skills and Strengths:
- Senses: Being blind, Rosali has learned to increase her sensitivity to the point where it is almost comparable with the elves. Her ears are extremely acute, being able to sense the slightest movement from a rather distant position. Also, when others speak, she has the ability to read their words so deeply and intricately that it is relatively easy for her to find out whether the person is lying or not. The tone, sound, and manner of the voice usually give them away. A glimpse at their personality is also observed by Rosali, as those same characteristics can be used as a means to figure out their character. Her sense of touch is also keen, as she can recognize most surfaces with only a single stroke. However, when she encounters the commoner's items, the heiress is completely ignorant.
- Influence and Persuasion: The reach of the Ambrose family is great, stretching to every coast of Alagaesia, and even slightly into the mainland. Though the shipping business is steadily falling, Rosali knows of the many "other" businesses that her father indulges himself with. Therefore, not only are they shipping business leaders, but also prominent in the black market. Though the leaders in Uru'baen have no knowledge as to her father's other sources of income, Rosali finds it relatively easy to use her family name against any opposition. Also because of her skill in the art of persuasion, the heiress has never found herself a hostage, as she always has managed to worm her way out of those situations.
Flaws and Weaknesses:
- Blindness: The first and foremost, also the most obvious. Rosali is blind. Her being so was a result of her mother being sick while she was impregnated with Rosali. Her father is in obvious denial that this was the cause, even though numerous doctors have attempted to tell him the truth ---- they have all failed to get past his delusion. Because of her state, the heiress has had to deal with much prejudice and judging, where people have underestimated her power to walk on a street, let alone lead a shipping company. She struggles daily to prove herself to everyone around her, and most the time, exceeds all their expectations.
- Guilt: Though no one has pushed the guilt of her mother's permanent illness on Rosali, she has done so herself. She has heard many a story about the wildly beautiful wife of Theodon Ambrose, a woman who had an aura of supreme grace and authority. The prime jewel of the Ambrose household. Somehow, Rosali has contorted her viewpoint to believe that the illness that her mother, Eurelia, contracted 21 years ago was her own fault. Though this is rarely thought about, the heiress has a tendency to become extremely uncomfortable with the mentioning of her mother, and does her best to avoid the subject. With someone she knows very well, Rosali tends to be more emotional, but usually attempts to keep a straight, but strained face when the subject appears. She has had many times to practice this expression at the family or business events that usually occur frequently in different ports.
Home and Family:
- The Ambrose Family: The family has existed for a long time, their business going as far back as a time when the Riders still roamed Alagaesia with their dragons. Their long family history gives them much merit and influence throughout the country --- but also a lot of pride. They are a highly sought influence in all matters concerning the Empire, as their reach extends throughout all of the porting cities, and many of their [also very old and prestigious] families in the inland. Galbatorix had a desire to control the Empire, and needed the Ambrose's help to accomplish his task. He infrequently sends a hefty some of money to the family to assure their alliance, as he obviously cannot force the prestigious family to bow under his reign.
However, their influence is starting to fail, as many porting cities are having numerous troubles getting their goods to the desired places to be delivered. Surda had fallen to the Varden, which eliminated the possibility of trade, and the family cannot still attempt to trade with them. They are too much under the spotlight, and any secret shipping would immediately be exposed to the Empire, and they would all be immediately be put to death. However, the Ambrose family still manages to survive through their extreme wealth, influence, and a whole lot of lying. They are constantly attempting to find a way to ship their packages, and does a more successful job that most competition.
History:
- The Blind Child: As a child, Rosali was weak, blamed for many irrevelent problems, and ignored by most of the Ambrose family. Her father desperately attempted to get "every available" doctor for his young daughter, in a vain attempt "to cure his daughter of her disease." But his large amounts of money did not solve anything, and soon Rosali had to learn to deal with her condition. Though she was blind, she was not deaf and dumb ---- contrary to what most of her fellow family members thought. Soon enough, the child learned to deal with these events by playing along with the adults, as she could not do anything else.
- The Heiress: Upon her thirteenth birthday, her father stubbornly announced to his family that Rosali would be the heir of his company, and that by the time he himself died, her condition would be cured, and she'd be able to lead the company. This started a chain reaction of lies, and family members began to immediately treat the girl would sickening sweetness. They sent her gifts in order to gain the girl's favor, and attempted to snatch her position using various mind games. It changed her personality dramatically, and from that Rosali has learned to detect lies with relative ease. She grew up strong and intelligent, in order to prove herself to the Ambrose family of her worth, and to frankly, survive.
- The Rebellion: Gradually, the life of a spoiled heiress began to grow dull for the woman, and at the age of eighteen Rosali decided that she was someday going to escape her present life. She knew it was going to take slow steps, and had enough common sense to investigate the new life she would have to adjust to once she disowned her name. It is a rather vain fantasy, as the woman knows she will probably never be able to do so. Instead, she allows herself frequent trips to the "normal world" with her kind maids covering for her, and has made many random acquaintances on these nightly journeys.
