Kyemen stood at the edge of the crags, hands clasped behind his back as he waited for the crimsoning light of the setting sun to glint and sparkle on the object he was scanning for. David was standing beside him, with similar purpose, but he said nothing. Indeed, there was nothing really to say. Their minds were set on the same thing, just as they had a few minutes before when Oromis had them practicing joint spells. Kyemen let out a long breath, as if he could breath out the strain and fatigue that he was now feeling. The tiredness from a hard day of training was bad. Waiting for what was about to come was worse.
That morning, Kyemen had finally bared the revalation before his teacher, that Aviand was, or thought he was, in love with Sierthra. While this would have been stressful enough, it was made worse by the fact that Sierthra seemed totally ignorant of the fact, and was evasive toward the whole subject. At last Kyemen had simply blurted the problem to Oromis, hoping that his wise opinion would give them some idea how to deal with the situation. The ancient elf however, for all his wisdom, was just as in the dark about the thing that had befuddled all sentient life since the begining of time. He did however tell them that the only way to deal with the matter was to talk frankly with their dragons, and then get the dragons themselves to find out what their feelings really were. It was so obvious that Kyemen realized that he knew it all the time, and yet in practice, there were few things he would not rather do.
Kyemen glanced over his shoulder at the hut, imagining Oromis inside, putting away his spell books and scrolls. Did he ever have to deal with these sorts of things in his long life? Kyemen would probably never know. He turned back to the crags, fighting the urge to tap his foot with impatience. Come on Sierthra. Where are you? He thought to himself instead. It was another few minutes of agonizing wait before he finally saw the telltale jewel-like glint on the horizon, rapidly resolving itself into a form he knew better than his own. He sighed again. It would be another few minutes.
Sierthra was happy with life. The powerful rythm of her wings was jaunty and self-assured. Even the hungry fatigue of her muscles was satisfying. She glanced behind, seeing Aviand and Glaedr hovering just behind her, the former looking just as jubilant, and latter about as excitable as a rock, as usual. But she had been around him long enough to read him, and she could tell he was pleased. And well he should be. After the first few tries, she and Aviand had performed well at the cooperative flying in the canyon, so much so that Sierthra was almost hoping that they would soon have some battle where they could use their newfound skills. But as she glanced at the smaller silver dragon, she chided herself for the thought. He's not ready. Not yet. She set her eyes forward again, focusing on her destination. Despite how well she had done and how satisfied she felt, she was glad it was over for the day. The conversation she and Kyemen had that morning still burned in her mind, and she wanted to get him alone to talk about it. She could see that her rider was stressed and weary, and she lemented that she could only help so much. She had promised to take him to a place where they could relax, and she knew just the place. She looked back at the dragons behind her and wished, not for the first time, that they could fly a little faster... She sighed. Sometimes it was hard being the best in her field. At last they reached Oromis' hut, seeing two standing figures at the cliff's edge. With a smile she banked around the clearing, testing the winds before dropping into a swift landing. She folded her resplendant wings neatly to her sides to provide more room for Glaedr and Aviand, who were only a few yards behind. Hello Kyemen, David. She called cheerfully. Aviand landed next, followed closely by Glaedr, who then walked in the direction of the hut, no doubt to converse with Oromis about the days event. As Sierthra watched him go, Kyemen approached her carefully. He could sense her pride at their accomplishments rolling from her like waves of warm sunlight, which only made his heart heavier. She was more cheerful than she had been for some time, and he thought it was the worst possible timing for the subject that he needed to discuss. But it could wait until they were in the air at least, as he and David had agreed. Now that Sierthra was focusing more on their connection, she caught his mood right away. What's wrong? You're as tense as a cornered rabbit. An apt enough simile, he thought. Cornered by a myriad of complications and problems. Nothing. I'll tell you about it on the way back. She sniffed, shaking her head much like a horse shook its mane. All right. We’ll talk about it when we get to that place I told you about. I promised you some time, remember. Kyemen mechanically climbed into the saddle, inwardly lamenting her ignorance. Or perhaps her avoidance of the issue, he couldn’t be sure. Either way, he would have to fix that, because it needed to be done. Yes Sierthra, we have much to talk about…[/Blockquote]

The dying sun's rays illuminated the cliff-face where David and Kyemen stood, waiting somewhat patiently for their companions to arrive - or David was trying to. Without even glancing at his friend, he could tell that Kyemen was restless, thinking about what was about to happen. David didn't like to think about it, but it always managed to worm its' way into his mind anyways. There were many things that he didn't want to feel or experience in life, and this situation was one of them for sure. Finding out that your dragon is in love is one thing. But also realizing that the situation is getting out of hand and that you are caught in the middle is another. Combined with the fact that Oromis has not been able to offer any advice rather than confide in their dragons. And of course, David was not eager to tell Aviand about it or to dissuade him. He wasn't even sure yet if he should. To make matters even worse, Sierthra was completely unaware of the whole thing - or at least Kyemen had said. She did not yet realize about how Aviand felt nor did she feel anything in particular towards him rather than the strong sense of friendship. This was the most sensitive topic since David was unsure of how she would take the situation. He wasn't sure what would happen at all. He just hoped that things would turn out alright for all of them, though it was very unlikely that it would for Aviand.
Aviand flew through the afternoon sky, barely managing to keep up with the huge golden Glaedr. The mountain-sized dragon was always a wingbeat ahead of him while Sierthra, with her unusual gift for speed, was a green shape moving up ahead. He was pleased with the afternoon and was excited to tell David what he and Sierthra had accomplished. It had even been fun a while after they had gotten used to avoiding each other and simply enjoyed their fun flight. He also found it strangely nice that he could relate and communicate with the other dragon like that and that they got along naturally. Of course he always knew that they got along well, but this was proof to him that together they were a formidable team. The young dragon was also glad of just being able to be with Sierthra like that and hoped fervently that they would remain friends a long time. He nearly dragon smiled in pleasure as he watched Sierthra hover up ahead waiting for them and then zoom on again. He was sure that, besides David, Sierthra was his favourite company.
Oromis's hut immediately lit up in a shower of silvers in the sun, and he directed his flight towards the two figures he spotted standing in wait near it. Glaedr continued in smooth, straight flight towards Oromis's hut, ending the lesson officially. Aviand pumped his wings harder to catch up with Sierthra, although he had no hope to, and snorted happily when he saw David's expectant face. Sierthra called a greeting as she touched down and Aviand followed moments after. David's face broke instantly into a look of odd relief and approached him slowly, almost cautiously. Kyemen walked towards Sierthra in the same manner. Aviand tilted his head in confusion. What's wrong? Was I gone too long? His question ended in a half-joke, but he saw that David didn't buy it. David went up to Aviand, trying to hide his dread behind concentration as he put on the saddle that he and Oromis had obviously finished during the lesson. Aviand watched him closely, trying to scrutinize through his coverup and see what was wrong. For the first time, David was glad that he was not yet a master of reading David's disguises. It's alright, Aviand. I'm just a little tired, I suppose. ...But like you said earlier, we need to talk. Aviand nodded though his eyes were still careful. David wondered if he suspected what he was planning on saying, but the suspicion vanished as the gray dragon looked towards the spring green dragon beside him. David couldn't help but wince at the look of admiration in the young dragon's eyes as he looked at her. This might be harder than he had anticipated. He took a quick look at Kyemen and guessed that he was thinking the same thing from what his eyes betrayed and tried to put his efforts into looking encouraging. Come on, David! You're slow today. Aviand's voice shook him from his thoughts, and looked over at his partner. Let's go.Aviand lifted off easily with David on his back, although David tightened his grip on the saddle instinctively. Aviand laughed low in his throat, still not hinting the tension in the air. In half a second, Sierthra was in the air too and the four of them were off. David couldn't help but feel open irritation when Aviand changed his course to match Sierthra's. Aviand... They're probably doing something together. We should leave them alone. Aviand snorted, and didn't change his path. We're already going in the same direction as they. It won't hurt to tag along just until we change ways. David sighed, but didn't want to make his friend annoyed before he had to be. He took a deep breath, ready for anything that would happen in the next little while... Aviand, we need to talk now, he began hesitantly.[/blockquote]

While her rider was going through the practiced ritual of strapping his legs into the saddle, she bid goodbye to her master. But she wasn't really listening to the response. Her mind was on Kyemen's foreboding statement. She wondered... could it be... I'm ready. Let's get out of here. Came Kyemen's signal before she could follow the thought, which made her feel oddly relieved. Unfurling her wings, she leapt casually into the sky, happy to have her feet off the ground again. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Aviand taking off behind her, somewhat more laboriously. Well, she couldn't blame him. He had only carried his rider for the first time a few hours before, although he was finding it much easier than he thought. With a slight twinge of annoyance, she noticed that the younger dragon was banking to follow her. Of course, they were going the same direction, but now it meant she would have to fly as slow as he for the sake of courtesy. Again she wished that he could fly faster, it would make things so much easier. But she enjoyed his company, and that was more important than any speed differential. Still, she would eventually have to break it to him that she and Kyemen were not actually heading back to the city... So. She said flatly to break the the thin veil of silence that had fallen between her and Kyemen. What is it that you need to talk to me about? The roiling mass of discomfort that hovered in her rider's mind suddenly grew heavier. It wasn't a good sign. She realized that it was something serious, and she felt her good humor deflate. ...I'm not sure how to start. He said at last. Then just spit it out without subtlety and get it over with. She felt Kyemen draw in a breath, as if in preparation for a blow. Sierthra, Aviand thinks he's in love with you. What followed was the most profound silence that Sierthra could remember, undiminished by the slower-than-normal pumping of her wings. It was nearly a full minute before she finally spoke, merely out of the need to say something. I'm not sure what to think here Kyemen. But deep down, she knew she did. In a place in her mind hidden so well that even she sometimes forgot it was there, she knew that this subject had to surface eventually. Just tell me if you knew. He said in response. Her stomach dropped. Much as she did not want to believe it, she knew she had to tell him now, she had to. Yes, yes I think I did. I... I didn't call it that, but-
Then why didn't you tell me? Kyemen asked angrily, instantly regretting it. The tone of his voice caused Sierthra to wince, and the action immediately made him sorry. He quickly softened his tone. Why didn't you tell me, Sierthra? In her mind he found a sense of tension, something she desperately wanted to tell him, and at the same time was afraid to. You had a lot on your mind. I didn't want to add another strain. She offered weakly. That's not it and both of us know it. Come now, why is it so hard to tell me? He asked softly, pleadingly. Why did you ignore this?[/Blockquote]

There was a brief silence of deliberation on both sides after David's awkward words. Finally Aviand broke through it by saying, Well? Tell me then. After the inevitable words, David was at a loss of what to say; how to begin. After all, he was breaking huge news to his dragon by doing this, possibly about to meet the wrath that he was hoping would never land on him. But he had to do it sooner or later, and unfortunately, Oromis had chosen sooner. Um...I don't know what I should say exactly. Aviand snorted, still not sensing anything about David's mood although his good spirits were beginning to plummet slightly. Okay, just tell me regardless of my feelings. David's heart sped up at this because he really didn't want to. But he did, knowing that there was no other way. Aviand, I think that you are in love. Silence. During the long period of complete quiet, David shot a glance up ahead at Sierthra and what he could see of Kyemen, wondering if their situation was any better. Meanwhile, Aviand simply tried to focus on flying, letting his whole essence spread throughout his body to speed his flight - and trying to make sense of what David said at the same time. It wasn't like he didn't have a clue what his Rider just said. It was more like he didn't want to know. But deep inside. he knew that he had just been waiting for the moment. And that he could never have escaped it, no matter what he tried. Slowly, he felt his concentration on being ignorant slip away and found himself back in reality, facing the next stage. ...Aviand? David called at length. There was no reply for quite some time after that as the dragon tried to recompose himself. Then he heard the dragon say softly, mostly to himself. Why Sierthra? David wanted to say something, but felt for the strangest reason as if he were intruding on a conversation even though Aviand was talking to himself. At last, Aviand began to pay attention to David again to the elf's immense relief. Why are you bringing my attention to it? David knew his answer even as the dragon spoke. Because I think something should be done about it. Why do you think this? came the expected yet dreaded question. Once again, David was stumped on what to say. He wanted to follow Aviand's words and say what he thought, oblivious to Aviand's own thoughts. It would make things much easier, yet at the same time David would hate himself for it. Plus Aviand had showed no signs of anger at being called upon the subject yet and David was not planning to provoke him. Face it, Aviand. Sooner or later you need to tell Sierthra. Such a matter cannot be ignored. There, he'd said it. It wasn't heartless, but it wasn't exactly liberating for the dragon. He could feel Aviand's disapproval like a contained wave in his mind, waiting for the moment to crash onto the shore. David sighed then added, And Aviand, she needs to know the truth. The moment David said this, he felt his friend's thoughts pulling away as the dragon was recoiling with his mind. I don't want to. I can't. Instead of Aviand getting annoyed like how David imagined it, he found himself getting angry. What do you mean you can't? But even as he said it, he knew. He knew why Aviand couldn't tell Sierthra. But at the same time, he wondered what the spring green's reply would be. After all, he couldn't read her heart. He couldn't even read her actions. Aviand was much more skilled at reading her than he was just as he could dimly read Kyemen now and then. Although Sierthra had always seemed ignorant to the situation, he began to ponder on whether she really was or if there was something he and Kyemen were missing.[/blockquote]

The silence dragged on for an oppressively long time. Whatever he was about to hear was something that she had hidden from him for weeks, which hurt him in a way he had never felt before. He could feel it now, a place in her mind that was walled off with a barrier that burned like cold steel against his skin. Kyemen felt his anxiety growing with each second, feeling like he was on the edge of an enormous cliff, waiting for it to give way under him. The beating of her wings grew more labored, as if it wasn't suddenly a great burden. At last Sierthra spoke, her voice a anguished whisper. Because I was afraid. Kyemen blinked. What? I ignored Aviand's affection because I was afraid. She repeated more strongly, as if it would clarify. Kyemen's shoulders sagged. It was so anticlimactic that he almost laughed out loud. Sierthra, out of curiosity, what do you think I feel like right now? He asked, a slight edge in his voice. Since when have either of us had the luxury of using that excuse? You don't understand... Then help me understand. Come Sierthra, you have helped me face every fear I have ever had. You have defeated or survived every enemy you have ever come across, and you tell me you are afraid? You have no idea! Throughout his questioning, Sierthra had been slowly retreating into her own conscious, as if to escape the words. But now she burst forth again, the force of her mental shout making him jump. Do you honestly know what it's like? All my life, I have never truly been afraid of anything. Afraid for you, yes. Afraid that we would fail, and the Varden would lose us, yes, I have feared for those things, but never really for myself. Kyemen caught a flash of light off a tear beneath her eye, and found his own eyes were wet. But now, in the face of this, I'm as terrified as a new hatchling. Do you have any idea what it's like? To be so sure of everything throughout your life, and then suddenly be faced with something that you have no idea how to deal with? Kyemen could think of nothing to say. Suddenly the cold barrier fell away, allowing him to look into thoughts and memories she had kept hidden. He saw the time before journey across the desert, spent with the young Aviand. He felt her sense of pride as he grew in strength and skill, especially in the air. She passed on as much wisdom as she could, tempered by her experience. And then, soon before the long journey to Ellesmera, he felt her realization that there was something about the younger dragon's manner that was a bit off, something that she had never known of before. She dismissed it and moved on again and again, eventually trying to avoid the thought like an enemy that dogged her wherever she went, burying it as deeply as she could until it was hidden even from her. Through it all, he felt a sense of cold, stomach-knotting terror that was totally alien to them both, a kind that was far different than any kind that Kyemen had ever experienced. Now do you understand? Sierthra asked at last, breaking his reverie. He found that he was sweaty and trembling from sharing her thoughts and feelings. He took a deep breath to get his heartbeat under control. Yes Sierthra, I do understand. It seemed a night for awkward silences. While no words went between them, Kyemen used the time to nail down his thoughts. While he could now feel Sierthra's pain and fear as well as his own, at the same time he felt a perverse relief. Now, they at last had no secrets between them. Everything had been laid bare for the other to see. They knew each other again, and it was the best feeling Kyemen had ever known. Sierthra drew in a deep breath and let it out with a hiss. Well, now what? She asked at last, her tone more composed. Yes, Kyemen figured that it was probably time to decide where to go from here, now that he had uncerimoniously dragged the issue into the open. He gave a look back to find out what David and Aviand were doing. He found them some fifty yards behind, but there was no visual clues as to how well their talk was going. Whatever we do, we can't ignore this any longer. We need to find someplace to talk this out. Where were you planning on heading tonight? A large rock formation east of the city. Kyemen thought it over. Yes, it would definitely be easier to be away from the city. Yes, let's head there. ...And hope David knows to follow. He didn't say. As Sierthra banked to change course, Kyemen hoped desprately that Oromis was right, and they were doing the right thing in forcing a confrontation like this. But life had to go on. It had to.[/blockquote]

I'm sorry Aviand. David broke through the silence awkwardly when neither of them spoke. I shouldn't get angry. We need to go through this slowly. Help me to understand. Aviand didn't say anything, but his mind was doing something strange. All his thoughts and emotions were slowly receding, drifting away from David's outstretched conscious until all he could feel was Aviand's distant side of the link, still connected with his. Everything slowly began to tune out as David felt Aviand's mind retreating like mist on a sunny day. It was all leaving him, coiling up like Aviand was storing part of himself away. David was confused as every part of the dragon's mind closed away slowly. He didn't try to grab him and take him back, but simply blinked not understanding his friend's motives. Hesitantly, he attempted to reach out and touch Aviand's thoughts, but some feeling like a foreshadowing kept him at bay. At last, he sat back in the saddle and frowned. Aviand, I don't- He was cut off abruptly as a sudden flow of emotions shot out from under Aviand's guard. For a moment, David was stunned as he saw vivid pictures and even more real-like emotions flood his senses. He slowly, felt Aviand's mind returning, only bits though and heard his dragon say softly and slowly, Watch and understand then, little one. Another wave of emotions were released into David's mind, like bits of a book, and slowly the light gray dragon's mind returned, filling David's mind with Aviand's past thoughts and memories and feelings. He realized that the light gray dragon had been bottling up his memories, readying himself to let them pour into David's mind in perfect sequence. He saw, as expected, the young dragon's first encounter of Sierthra and how much awe, respect and admiration he'd felt. He felt Aviand's urge to bombard the older dragon with questions and learn as much from her as he could. He sensed Aviand's happiness to discover that he would be growing up along side one of his own race that would understand him and be able to explain things to him. He saw Aviand's longing to one day be like her. Then, the elf witnessed their long journey through the Hadaroc, and the way Sierthra had taught Aviand as much as she knew about flying and hunting and had shared knowledge she had picked up over her short time of life. He saw Aviand's joy at finally taking flight alongside her and being able to walk carrying David. He saw his deep trust of Sierthra as they continued to bond during their time together. Then, he saw something hidden deep under that. The very thing that David had been trying to reach but Aviand had kept hidden. He saw the dragon's devotion for his newfound friend and his sense of belonging with her. And as Aviand whizzed through the days of that time, he felt the pull to Sierthra growing stronger with each passing day. Finally, he saw the first day of training - that very day - and saw Aviand's new fondness for the light green dragon. He felt his liking for her stronger than it ever had been before. And he winced as Aviand tried as hard as ever to impress her on that lesson of swooping through the maze near the crags. Then he heard the conversation in his mind - more like felt it. He felt Aviand's total despair when David asked him to confess to Sierthra. He knew that the young dragon would much rather love her from a distance rather than get his feelings rejected. But at the same time, he found the dragon saw the truth in his words, even if it was grudgingly so. The whole time, he had been paying attention, he could feel Aviand's thoughts floating around him almost tentatively. Almost like he was preparing for David to launch an attack at him. Instead, David retreated out of Aviand's thoughts feeling shocked. He had seen to his friend's heart; something he hadn't expected to know for some time at least. He reached out tenderly to his friend's mind. Aviand, I know now. He didn't know what else to say. Aviand reacted to the touch by returning to linger near David's conscious. And I know what needs to be done. He heard the uncertainty still remaining in his tone. Yes? You're right, David. The situation can't be put off any longer. If it goes on like this, we will both explode emotionally. I will tell Sierthra. I'm proud of you. I know it's hard. Whatever happens, little one, at least the truth has been told and we both can say we truly know each other. And Sierthra will always be my friend, no doubt, regardless of how this turns out. They would have spoken further, but Aviand's attention was suddenly averted as Sierthra changed her course, flying due east of the city. David knew that it was time to part ways, but surprisingly enough, Aviand tilted his wings and made to soar after her, then halted as David's will ran through his mind. I need to tell her now, David. There is no other time. It must be sorted out today. However David wanted to just go to the city of Ellesméra and forget the whole thing until the next chance, he knew that Aviand was making the right decision and that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to dissuade him now. Very well, but after we leave them in peace. Aviand nodded even in midair. Agreed. And he took off as well, switching directions to match Sierthra's flight. David desperately hoped that today was a lucky day for them both.[/blockquote]

They flew in silence for several minutes, each trying to collect their thoughts. No more words were exchanged; they simply took strength in each other. Kyemen however was not totally without questions. Through Sierthra’s entire iteration, she had not answered one thing; did she love Aviand as he loved her? He tried searching through her thoughts and feelings for the answer, but all he was able to find was a nebulous mass of joys and sorrows, and no straight answer to what he sought. In the end, he decided not to ask. In the end, he knew that he was afraid to find out. Moments later, their destination hove into a view. Rising above the carpet of woodland green was a dark shape, looking like a flattened cone rising from the emerald sea, the sides pocked with shadowed indentations.. It looked like a magnificent spot to watch the last of the sunset.
When did you find this place? Kyemen asked, breaking the stillness between them. When I was out hunting a day ago. I thought it a good place to explore with the two of us. Kyemen caught the wistful sadness in her voice. Now it would be used for a different purpose. Finally she let herself down on the very top of the rock, her claws making a small clack when they settled. Kyemen quickly unstrapped himself from the saddle and dropped to the ground. He reflected absently that it was getting to be a noticeably longer drop every week or two. While Sierthra scanned Aviand's progress, he walked to the edge of the rock to get a look around. As he had noted from the air, it was a large spire of rock thrusting from the forest floor, whose top had somehow been made perfectly flat and smooth, probably by magic. He wondered why anyone would bother, using all that energy for apparently no purpose. There was many mysteries in the guarding forest. Kyemen could not see the slightest flaw in the surface of the rock, nothing that could occupy his attention and prevent his thoughts from wandering when he needed focus. Insead he looked out at the forest, the waning rays of the sun changing it into a shifting carpet of gold. What will I say to him? Sierthra asked, bringing his attention back to her. Her emerald eyes were locked on the silvery form of the younger dragon as he circled for a landing. Just tell him the truth. It will be hard, but we'll face it together. Sierthra turned to him, her eyes locking on him balefully. I mean, what will I say to him now , when he lands? That stopped Kyemen short. She was right, how would they broach this subject? Should any pleasantries be exchanged, or should they jump right to the point before he even furled his wings? He had to admit that he didn't have the slightest idea. He glanced up as he began to be buffeted by the draft of his wings as Aviand grew closer, dreading the awkwardness to come.[/blockquote]

For once in David's short life as a Rider he wasn't enjoying Aviand's rhythmic flight. Instead, he counted every wingbeat as getting closer and closer to a revelation. One that was most unwelcome on his part. His other part, though, he wasn't too sure about. All he could get from Aviand's many thoughts was a feeling of intense concentration and thought. But not on flying. David wondered how Aviand could let off such thoughtfulness without giving away what he was thinking about. Of course David did not press him, not wanting to pressure his companion anymore than he had to be before the 'talk' with Kyemen and Sierthra.
They are flying towards that large rock over there, Aviand said, cutting into the silence. David nodded once to show he'd heard and Aviand began to descend slowly as they neared. Randomly, David again was amazed at how much faster Sierthra was than Aviand. She was already settled on the rock, Kyemen by her side. Kyemen seemed to be inspecting their landing place while Sierthra followed Aviand's flight with her bright, beryl gaze. The light gray dragon blinked and turned his neck slightly to avert meeting her eyes. It would be too hard right now to try and read her before what was coming. The elf on his back sighed heavily, trying to think of what to say when they landed. After all, this would already be a tough conversation. It would be better to not open it up with utmost awkwardness. Aviand waited until they landed before doing anything. His talons scraped against the rock as he made his graceful landing, folding his wings slowly. David undid the leg straps and made his way to the ground, flashing a look at Kyemen. The other elf seemed too uncomfortable to do anything but look back, and David caught a look of unease in his glance. There was a clacking sound behind David as Aviand shuffled forward a few paces, his eyes still avoiding Sierthra's just enough to make it not seem rude. Greetings once again, Sierthra and Kyemen. He paused for a moment, and even David heard him exhale. The Rider nudged his friend's thoughts in a nearly encouraging way and Aviand continued, although his voice did nothing to shatter the tension in the air. I am sorry for following you, but there are some things we need to discuss, Sierthra. I would ask you to be patient and listen to what I have to say. As soon as it is sorted out, we will leave you. David took a small step forwards as Aviand finished. Aviand... Aviand didn't even move to his words. It's alright David. What is about to take place is for me only. Now I need to know. David nodded almost in slow motion, and stepped back again. He switched from looking to Kyemen to looking at his dragon. Her eyes gave nothing away about her thoughts - only Kyemen was accessible to that. They were fixed on Aviand, as she obviously thought of a way to reply to him. David swallowed, remembering to breathe. Whatever happened in the next few minutes, he would not interfere. This was Aviand and Sierthra's business, and one that should be left to them. He folded his hands in front of him patiently and waited as the silence stretched.[/blockquote]

Sierthra watched as her friend at last made a gracefully light landing, his silvery wings folding away like the sudden evaporation of a thunder cloud. She felt her heart knot almost painfully, like she had just been caught in an unexpected wind current. She did not seem to be the only one, as David hurriedly extricated himself from the saddle with the air of escaping an approaching flame before retreating a few paces. For his part, Aviand looked admirably calm about the whole thing, although Sierthra reflected that she probably did too. She found herself systematically shutting down all external emotions, as if she was in a particularly important planning session, damming up to let them burst forth later. However, she noted that he could not directly meet her eyes, and she knew him well enough now to catch the subtle hint of how agitated he was. Tension built with every second that something wasn't said. What can I say? What can I say? Kyemen answered with a mental shrug of his shoulders, Finally Sierthra was about to blurt out something about as subtle as a blow to the back of the head when Aviand at last spoke, almost making her jump involuntarily, starting to fractionally unfold her wings. Greetings once again, Sierthra and Kyemen. She restrained herself quickly from bolting into the sky, making a conscious decision to relax. Her outburst died in her throat, leaving a bitter taste behind. I am sorry for following you, but there are some things we need to discuss, Sierthra. I would ask you to be patient and listen to what I have to say. As soon as it is sorted out, we will leave you. Ah, a lifeline. She grabbed it. It is no trouble, Aviand. She responded, matching his earnest, almost business-like tone. Had you not come, I would have sought you out. There are indeed things we must get out of the way before another day dawns. Kyemen was astonished. Now, he knew he was the least qualified person in the world to speak of love, but here they were, about to discuss their feelings for each other like it was a... An enemy troop movement, or some alliance. Still, all beings reverted to what they knew under stress, and dragons were apparently no different. Both of them knew how to be courteous and polite, so they could use it as a bridge between them on which could discuss the unmentionable.[/blockquote]

Aviand felt the silence weighing down on him this time the moment the thought left Sierthra's mind because he knew that the next thing he said would probably be a crossroad for the conversation. Either a road in his favour or David's. He was aware that he couldn't drag on the talk forever, keeping the real issue at bay. If he said it all, packing the most important point in with other supporting details - if he said it right then - the conversation would become a frenzied ride. He would have to hold on with all his willpower if he was to last through it, and more importantly, his feelings. They were jumbled and confused and scattered, and when he gathered them all up, holing them to the very back of his mind, he realized what a mess he really was. The whole time, he had been trying to deny the truth by feigning indifference or pretending he didn't know what the problem was to David. But it was when he felt his own emotions, that he caught a glimpse of the strange dragon who was not Aviand showing through. The proud, eager young hatchling dying to prove himself to a very good friend even though she already thought of him highly. And when he finally spilled out his thoughts so he could view them like a flashback, the truth hit him so hard that he nearly stumbled backwards as if it had been a physical shock.
He was scared to love Sierthra.
He wasn't sure if he had known all along or had been frightened to admit it, but he knew it was true. He loved her, that was clear. But he was afraid to express his feelings any other way than showing off vividly or becoming someone he was not. He was afraid that Sierthra would reject him or worse, become even further away when she found out the truth. He didn't want to tell her because he didn't want to ruin it for himself. But in doing so - in hiding away - he had only caused more trouble for himself and David and even Kyemen and Sierthra. The whole time, he had been acting like a trapped fly. Gathering all his energy and storing it away, waiting for the perfect time to let it go. But he was young and his mind had not been prepared for the pent up thoughts and feelings, and so had exploded much earlier than he had wanted, resulting in the flow of emotions David had experienced earlier. In doing that, he had only become more sick with warm thoughts for the spring green dragon. And now that it was all coming together, dawning on him, he dreaded saying it all to Sierthra now, in this moment. But he couldn't put it off much long and he knew it. Here she was, waiting for him to reply. Besides, if he didn't tell her everything, how much did he really love her?
You must tell her exactly what you feel. Aviand didn't know if the voice belonged to him, David or an ancestral thought whispering through his mind, but whoever it was was right. He took a deep breath, and focused his eyes on her. Now that his mind was clear, it was much easier to meet her gaze. In fact, he knew that he wouldn't lose himself no matter what happened. As long as he knew what the truth was. Sierthra...I am willing to tell you everything - every small detail - but first and foremost, you must know the very reason I came today. A tendril of warmth flowed through his mind, obviously coming from David's end of the link. The emotion was pride. Aviand noted it with satisfaction, then continued, choosing his words carefully. I've learned something, Sierthra. From our time in Aberon. From our time in the desert. From our time in Ellesméra. Even right this moment. And...and I can't keep it to myself anymore lest I lose myself completely. He paused for a moment considering something, then stared at her squarely in the eyes. This is the time for you to be patient, he murmered. Please just listen to me now and ask what you will later. David's heart pounded as Aviand's words brought him closer and closer to telling Sierthra everything. Now was the moment that he had been dreading all day. Strangely and astonishingly, however, Aviand was completely calm. David had heard everything the dragon had run through his mind, and knew that he was prepared for it, but he was still anxious as to how it would all turn out after all this time. From in front of him, Aviand took another deep breath. David breathed too. It was time. I've been scared to admit it. To myself, to David, even to you. But now I will. Sierthra, I...I love you. He paused there, wondering if he should continue or not before deciding he probably should. To finish there would be like completing a story before giving the explanation for the ending. I do not know how much, but I know that I do, and it's long since over time that I should tell you...[/blockquote]

Kyemen took an involuntary breath, trying to suppress the noise and avoid disturbing the frosty silence. Now that Aviand himself had personally said it out loud, there could be no denying it anymore. There was no longer any chance that the whole thing could be one insane misunderstanding. It was a strange feeling. Neither dragon had been alive and awake for more than a year, and yet they now had to deal with something he had never even thought to experience in all of his many years of life. And the fact that Sierthra had almost always been wiser than he made it even stranger. At that moment, the final rays of the sun sank below the horizon, plunging the world into twilight. And still Sierthra was silent, head lowered, staring ahead with unfocused eyes. Kyemen sensed a welter of confused emotions from her mind that drowned one another out, like trying to hear two different songs at the same time. And still she came no closer to an answer. Kyemen gave her a gentle mental prod, just to set her thoughts in the right direction. This would be a very long night otherwise. Finally, she raised her head slowly in a movement that Kyemen knew as the one she used when she was about to do something hard, and spoke.
I know, Aviand. I know how much you love me. She swallowed, trying to clear away the unpleasant tightening in her throat. Ever since those days in Aberon, I knew it. I knew there was something there, and it frightened me. It frightened me to the point that I ignored and refuted it at every chance I could. That was wrong, and I am sorry. She paused, feeling Kyemen's trickle of approval at her admission. Aviand and David however remained silent, waiting, sensing that there was more. And there was. Much more. And I must admit, that I knew I had feelings for you as well. But now at last, I am certain. I love you. I have loved you almost since you were a hatchling. She meant to continue without pause, but she found that she could not bring herself to speak in the face of the explosion of joyful emotion radiating from Aviand's mind like the sun had arisen again. She very nearly lost her nerve right then and there, but she forced herself not to escape into the sky and hide forever. She had to tell him. She had to. I haven't finished, Aviand. She said softly, with as much gentleness as she could muster. She braced herself as much as she could, walling off her heart for whatever was about to happen next. Although I love you, I also believe that we must not be life-mates. Not yet, and perhaps not ever.[/blockquote]

For a long time after his awkward words, Sierthra remained absolutely silent and still as a statue. Aviand didn't know what to think. He had told Sierthra all he wanted to tell her and he had told David everything as well. The only problem left was how Sierthra took it, and so far it seemed like she wasn't keen on ever moving again. Kyemen was watching her patiently, though from his eyes Aviand could tell he was deep in thought too. During the waiting time, Aviand turned his head slightly to regard David and found him watching him intently. Aviand expected him to say something, but he said nothing, and dropped his gaze after a few minutes as if he picked more out of the atmosphere than Aviand did. He turned back to Sierthra and found that, in the rays of the dying sun, she had raised her head and although she wasn't looking at him directly, the look of thoughtfulness had faded from her green gaze. Aviand held his breath, sensing something important that was about to take place in the near future.
When she finally spoke, it was slow almost like she was contemplating each word as she said it and also as if she was choked. David looked up too as she admitted that she had known all along about Aviand's feelings and about how she had avoided them out of fear for herself - and possibly for Aviand. David's eyes widened. So she had known! He wondered about what might have happened if she'd been a different type of dragon. Would things have sorted themselves out sooner...or later? But he had no time to think this fully over because the air of tension lifted half a degree and was replaced by something different. A strange kind of tenderness. Not strong enough to be intensity, but still strong enough that he could pick out a jumble of emotions, though he didn't know if it was Aviand or Sierthra.
As the green dragon continued on, now a little more sure of herself, Aviand lifted his head suddenly, his stormy eyes widening as she confessed her love for him. A surge of sudden joy washed over him, replacing his unsureness of telling her what he had and all his anxieties for the future. The happiness seemed to clean out every negative emotion within him, and even though there was no wind, Aviand felt like he was soaring. He imagined what he must have looked like, and glanced at Sierthra, swiveling his gaze from the sky and David. He was shocked to see tension beyond words in her eyes, and to see her looking as if she were about to take off. The surprise was instantly replaced by confusion, and as she continued, her voice completely melted the lightness in Aviand's heart, replacing it with cold anticipation. Although I love you, I also believe that we must not be life-mates. Not yet, and perhaps not ever. For a moment after her words, all he felt was cold creeping onto his limbs. He forced himself to look at Sierthra, and found only grief pouring from her in a choking mass. He lowered his head quickly, and stood there as still as Sierthra had been, the cold seeming to freeze his limbs. As he stood there motionless, David looked towards Kyemen, but only found the same shock there in his look. So he had obviously not been expecting Sierthra to say that either. Giving up on the other pair, he switched to looking at Aviand, trying to grasp his thoughts in his own. But instead of reaching him, Aviand's mind slipped away like water through his fingers, and every time he grabbed at it, it seemed to drift further away. Aviand! David pleaded the dragon. Speak to me. Speak to her at least. Aviand? His friend gave no outward sign that he had heard him. Aviand was trying to gather himself meanwhile, rehearing what Sierthra had said. Although the cold was still clinging to him, he realized something from the sentence that brought him some resolve. Although I love you, I also believe that we must not be life-mates. She had only said she didn't think they were ready to be mates, and perhaps never would. She had never said that because of it, she or him would have to stop loving the other. He could still love her without being her mate. Inside, he considered whether it really would be a good idea during the war. Besides, they already shared a bond of friendship stronger than most, and they didn't need the title of being mates to enforce. They had their love, their loyalty...their cooperation. Slowly, the dampening mist cleared from his mind and body, and he heard David's words reverberating inside his head. Tell her at least... Aviand looked up. Perhaps the situation was not as bad as he thought. Perhaps they were already closer than being mates. As the chilliness disappeared entirely to be replaced by newfound fondness of the spring green dragon in front of him, the gray dragon raised his head, and met Sierthra's gaze. In the depths of her green eyes, he saw heart-wrenching sadness for what she had just said. Although she had meant it, it had pained her to say it especially after literally proposing to him. She had probably thought that he had come here and told her that in advance to them becoming mates even though he now knew they were not only too young to be mates, but also, just not suited to it...yet. Aviand shook his head to clear the last of his rejected thoughts and swallowed before speaking. It's alright, Sierthra, he said, his voice soft. He was almost hoped that David and Kyemen weren't listening in, even though it was inevitable that they were. I understand. Perhaps that way of life is not ours and possibly never will be. Just know this. As long as it is permissible to you, then my feelings for you will go on. Not shown in the same way, perhaps, but they will remain. Maybe we aren't destined to be mates, but our love is something that cannot be ended nor stopped. With these words, he raised his head, almost determinedly and met her avoiding eyes evenly. David was surprised that he was still technically a hatchling, yet he was still confirming his affections for Sierthra. He was amazed that Aviand could hold it in this long let alone deal with it this way. While Sierthra's words might have crushed another lovesick dragon, it had only seemed to make Aviand closer to her. Aviand wasn't done though. David could see that he didn't want to go on forever, but he did have one last thing to say. So the elf waited patiently, feeling nothing but pride for Aviand at the moment. David was right of course. Before Sierthra could say something in reply to his message, he said, almost repeating his first confession. And I do love you, Sierthra. Never forget that. I hope that this meeting has not changed your feelings about me, but my feelings will never change about you no matter if we are mates or not. It seemed quite final, and David allowed a smile to creep onto his lips. He looked up, glancing once again at his elven friend even though he knew the next words belonged to Sierthra. He tried to, once again, search for a feeling in the air, but caught only Aviand's fierce affection. Nothing at all that would give him any hint as to how the target of his emotion was dealing with the new topic.[/blockquote]

Sierthra wanted to rage. She wanted to fly and roar and destroy everything she could reach. Because he had just listened to her pronouncement that must have shredded his heart even as it was shredding hers, and had accepted it. Accepted it, without even asking why. If he had been angry, or at least saddened it, then it might have given some indication that this was the wrong decision. That they were right to be mates now. But instead of being angry, and demanding her reasons, he had agreed wholeheartedly with her decision, simply out of his respect for her. With that action, he proved his love for her. He needed no reasons, no offerings, he just needed to know that she thought it was the right thing to do. It made her love him more than ever. But she also knew that this was the right thing to do, and derived no comfort from the fact. With that, the fog of confused emotions solidified into a cold knot of dread in the pit of her stomach.
And I do love you, Sierthra. Never forget that. I hope that this meeting has not changed your feelings about me, but my feelings will never change about you no matter if we are mates or not. He continued in that soft, peacefully calm way of his, completely without anger or malice, and it cut her all the same. Of course his feelings wouldn’t change. They would be seeing each other every day for conceivable future, and he couldn’t stop his feelings any more than he could stop thinking. It wasn’t as if they could go to opposite corners of the earth and not see each other again until the time was right. Life had to go on. Of course nothing has changed, Aviand. This encounter simply makes us aware. But that does not change the fact that I cannot in good conscience become one with you, not yet. Kyemen continued to stand motionless off to one side, trying to pin down his own thoughts while trying to calm hers. He wasn’t having much success. From the start of her conversation, he felt her mind withdrawing more and more from his until now, it felt distant and ethereal, as if she was hundreds of miles off. The only thing he could sense was that feeling of nebulous confusion from before, although so distant he felt like he was looking at it through a layer of mist. But then, even as he watched, it convalesced into a solid ball of agonized determination. Her eyes seemed to lose the glassy sheen, replaced by a razor intensity that Kyemen had never seen before. I’m sorry, Aviand. She stated quietly. I can’t do this anymore. It hurts too much. With this, she spread her wings and leapt into the sky, winging over to speed away from the rock faster than Kyemen had ever seen. Without thinking Kyemen rushed ot the edge of the plateau after her in an exercise in futility, not even able to touch her mind to call her name. She shrugged off his touch, concentrating entirely on getting away, not caring where… And then she was gone. Gone, leaving Kyemen with a sense of absence that was almost painful. He turned back to the other two, trying to keep the strain out of his voice. “I’m sorry. I… I have to go find her.” He stammered lamely. Without waiting for a response, he turned and dived nimbly over the edge of the rock, preparing to use magic to cushion his fall. He tried not to think about anything beyond finding Sierthra, for fear of his thoughts overwhelming him. He knew one thing though, he would trek through half the forest to find her. He also knew he might have to.[/blockquote]

Aviand's emotions were getting complex and harder for David to follow so he simply veered off of his own friend's feelings and moved onto trying to study Sierthra only out of what the air around her suggested. He could still sense some balled up tension radiating from her like a dark storm cloud which he shied away from. He realized then that he didn't want to know what Sierthra was thinking before she said it. He was half waiting for her to give in then and there and agree to Aviand's longing for them to be together, but she didn't. Instead she replied to Aviand's words in that slow contemplative way of hers that did not give off any clear thoughts behind it. Almost like she was strictly controlling the tone of her comment.
David was just starting to shift from the silence when he saw something creep into Kyemen's gaze. A strange kind of confusion or baffled concentration and he was looking in the general direction of his dragon. Suddenly and without warning, Sierthra moved ever so slightly, suggesting the opening of her wings. When she spoke again, her tone was so soft that David instinctively strained forwards even to hear the mental words. I can't do this anymore. It's too hard. Before any of them could do anything, she unfurled her great green wings and jumped from the rock, swooping overhead to set her course and whizzing away, so fast that she was a green blur. The wind of her wake settled down quickly and the three of them were still standing there, blinking in shock. The first to react was Kyemen. As her form began to slowly get smaller and smaller, he scrambled to the edge of the formation and looked out after her almost desperately. David was sure he was shouting after her, but he was keeping it to himself. Sierthra obviously wasn't - or would not - listen because she kept going. The second to move was Aviand, of course. The light gray dragon craned his neck out into the open sky as he watched Sierthra swift departure. Wait, Sierthra! Come back! he called uselessly as she disappeared altogether. David hinted the same tone in his voice that Kyemen had showed as he had tried to bring her back as well. Finally, he forced his muscles to move as well and clamped his iron will over the part of Aviand's mind that was thinking of taking off in pursuit. The dragon crouched slightly and let a rumble roll from his chest, although David couldn't tell whether it was frustration, disappointment or confusion. Meanwhile, he walked over to Kyemen who was looking over the side of the platform. He stuttered a hurried excusal, then jumped over the side of the rock. David didn't watch him hit the ground, instead turning back to meet Aviand's expressionless stare. He still couldn't read him enough at the moment to tell if he was hurt or not. For a few wordless seconds, the pair stared at each other as if dramatized by the situation. At last David spoke out loud, wanting to shatter the silence verbally. "Well. Let's go then." He was met by a half stony look. So...we're just going to let them both go after all that? David stepped forward and placed his hand onto Aviand's neck, feeling that tingle run up his arm from coming into contact with the dragon. He suspected it would become customary after a time so he wouldn't feel it. I say give them some time. Sierthra will probably need some time to digest all that... His friend snorted and David read his mind. Like the elf, Aviand had not ever suspected Sierthra would run at an unfaceable problem. He had always considered her the quiet, wise and thoughtful one. Truth be told, David would have thought that, if anyone, it would be Aviand to flee at the prospect of rejection or being overwhelmed. Besides, Sierthra had known all along about Aviand's love. Having it brought out into the open though...it may have done something - either good or bad - to both of the dragons. For instance, they would always have a part of each other lodged in their minds. Aviand would never stop thinking of Sierthra as she would never stop thinking about him likewise. It was impossible. Yet David was also wondering about how the two would react should they happen upon each other in the future. Would they express their affections openly or treat each other like how they had at the very beginning of the encounter? Anyhow, David was eager to leave the rock and head back to the city. The air was still filled with scattered emotions, and he was beginning to lose himself in the silence of the atmosphere. He turned towards Aviand, to find him already unfurling his wings in preparation for flight though his eyes were distant. David followed his line of vision, although he had already guessed that Aviand had been once again looking in the direction Sierthra had left like he was nearly wishing she would change her mind and come back. David knew their was nothing either of them could do. Even if they offered to help Kyemen search, Aviand was nowhere near as fast as the green dragon nor even breaching her size. It would take forever to find her, especially with night coming on. Besides, the only one that really might have a chance of finding her would be her own Rider. He might be the one she would be willing to talk to as well. Even though it was clear she loved Aviand as dearly as he loved her, it wouldn't be easy to redo the whole meeting. Aviand seemed to catch this and shook his wings, waiting for David to get seated and strapped in. When he was ready, the dragon leaped to the air and sped off the way they had come. For a time, both of them sat in silent contemplation of the day's events until Aviand finally spoke, his voice tinged with what seemed to be an attempt to lighten the atmosphere. You do know, David, that I would never leave without you even in the most direst of situations. The Rider heard, but didn't reply; his thoughts were elsewhere. Today had been an unusually stretched out day and he would be glad to return to the familiarness of Ellesméra and try to put aside the dilemmas until they were brought up urgently again. Somehow though, he had a feeling this meeting had only been the beginning of a very complicated relationship.[/blockquote]

Kyemen dashed along the narrow branch, trying to keep his balance why craning his neck to scan the darkening sky. The stars were very clear and sharp tonight, providing more than enough light for him to traverse the top of the trees, instead of weaving through the undergrowth on the ground. He swung through the branches in a frenzied rush, unable to get the memory of the raw pain in his greatest companion's tone... He looked down just in time to see the branch coming to an end, and he barely managed to launch himself across the gap between trees. He landed badly and tumbled down several feet, bumping against several limbs before righting himself awkwardly. He scrambled back on balance and kept going, ignoring the cut on his arm.
Sierthra was close now, he could sense it. She was shutting him out of her mind, and he was unable to talk to her, but she couldn't completely hide from him. Like a lantern in front of him, he could always sense approximate distances, even if the light was faint. He was just grateful she hadn't chosen to fly so far away that he could no longer sense her at all. It heartened him slightly that she did not truly want to be completely alone, even if she thought she did. Suddenly his heart leapt into his throat and he was falling at an angle through empty space as the foliage before him ended. Instinctively he tucked his legs against his chest in order to get his feet under him, then straightened just in time to land in a crouch, absorbing the impact with his knees. He held the position for several seconds, trying to bring his hammering heart under control as best he could. He noticed gradually that he was in a large clearing in the forest; hence the sudden stop of his travel. It was basically all waist-high scrub grass and weeds... Something glimmered in the bright moonlight on the other side of the clearing. Sierthra? There was no response, but there was a subtle change in her feel over the link. Carefully he edged closer. It's all right Sierthra. Please talk to me. He projected as much comfort across the link as he could muster, but her conscious remained firmly beyond reach. Finally he was close enough to make out the rest of her over the grass, and the sight made him stop. There she was, laying there, her wings fully splayed out like she had decided she didn't want to fly anymore and simply dropped. Kyemen swallowed and took a tentative step forward, laying a cautious hand on her scaly tail. No reaction. Not even a twitch. Nothing. He worked his way forward up her lengthy form, running his hand over her flank. He reached her head at last, and found her staring straight ahead into nothing, her normally sharp and clear eyes clouded and distant. He stepped into her field of view, but she didn’t even blink. Just continued to stare into the netherworld, not even blinking once. Kyemen settled into a crouch beside her, resolving to wait until whatever stupor had come over her had passed. There was nothing else he could do. He waited for a long time. It must have been three hours before the emerald well in front of him blinked and focused on him, losing its glassy sheen for her usual piercing keenness. You won’t give up, will you? She said finally, moving her head to fix him with both eyes. Let me put it this way. Have you ever given up on me? The gloom that shrouded her end of the connection lightened considerably at that, prompting Kyemen to smile with her. I suppose not. Although you’ve pushed me. She paused, shifting her wings slightly as they rustled in the grass. I’m sorry for my behavior… Kyemen cut her off with a dismissive gesture. No apology needed. To me anyway. You might want to extend one to Aviand tomorrow though. I will, believe me… You’re hurt. He looked where she was staring, remembering the wound on his arm. Huh, I suppose I am. I botched a landing on the way here. He accessed the magic and muttered the words of healing under his breath, and the cut sealed itself without a scar. All at once, his body seemed to remember how tired it was, causing him to sway a little. There. Good as new. We should probably head back to the city, if you’re ready. It will be another long day tomorrow… Sierthra gathered herself into a less sprawled out position, folding in her wings and bringing her legs under her. But you have questions. Don’t pass it off, I can tell that look. You’re wondering about something. Kyemen stopped talking, considering. Yes, he did indeed have questions, but he didn’t know at all how to phrase them. I guess… I guess I’m just wondering why. I mean, Aviand makes you happy, and you him, right? So, what’s the problem? He never asked, so I suppose he already knows, but I’m in the dark. Why can’t you go deeper than friendship? There was silence between them deepen for several moments, leading Kyemen to hope that he hadn’t been insensitive and offended her somehow. In this territory, what could he know? The only love he could really know was the one he had for Sierthra, and he suspected that this was not at all the same sort. He berated himself for being so… No, Kyemen, stop. You are right to ask. I’m just… thinking of how best to help you understand. She spoke haltingly. I love Aviand, that much I know. But I don’t think… I don’t want my love for him to come between me and my responsibility to the rest of Alagaesia. Kyemen frowned. I’m not following. She took a deep breath and released it slowly. Think of it this way. You are the closest companion I could ever have, closer even than Aviand could ever be. And yet, if I had to sacrifice you to win this war, I would do it, and I think you would do the same with me. Kyemen wasn’t sure what he thought of that, but said nothing. But if Aviand and I were mates, I would not have the strength to put my responsibility above my feelings for him. This is not the time for my happiness. My duty must come first. Kyemen mulled it over for several moments. As strange as it sounded, he decided that she was right. I… I understand, Sierthra.
